Job summary

Applications are invited for an enthusiastic, motivated and committed individuals to join our friendly team within the Emergency Department at Colchester Hospital.

12 Months Fixed Term in the first instance

Pay: 12.5 PAs (of which 1 SPA/week) Specialty Doctor pay scale based on experience.

Location: Emergency Department, Colchester Hospital.

Ideal candidates will have the minimum experience of one year in Emergency Medicine and be 3 years post-completion of FY2 or equivalent.

Main duties of the job

We are pleased to offer our current and future Senior Clinical Fellows/Specialty Registrars our newly approved bespoke program in Emergency Medicine which allows individualised yearly secondments in key specialties for career progression and the possibility to apply for CESR in Emergency Medicine.

The rota offers an excellent work-life balance allowing annual leave spells of up to three weeks. In addition, it also offers the possibility to gain experience in relevant specialties of interest up to 8 weeks per year, with a total of 6 months/4-year contracts.

An allocated mentor within Emergency Medicine as well as a clinical supervisor when on secondment will be provided.

Local opportunities to become ALS and ATLS instructors, as well as full support from all EM consultants to prepare for FCEM are provided.

The new rota allows protected weekly teaching sessions and a new journal club is being set up by our FCEM consultants.

Colchester ED is a Major Trauma Unit with a helipad in front of the department and has close links with Emergency Department/Major Trauma Centre at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

Job responsibilities

This post is not recognised by the College of Emergency Medicine for professional training. However, this post gives an opportunity to expand and consolidate the post holders current medical knowledge. The post-holder will also have a valuable opportunity to participate in the further development of services, which forms an important and often neglected, part of higher medical training.

The successful candidate will be clinically responsible to the Consultants for the reception, resuscitation, diagnosis, and initial treatment of all emergencies in the main Emergency Department. There is the same responsibility for clinical decisions on appropriate admission of patients into hospital beds to special units or other hospitals, to out-patient clinics, or to the care of the family doctor.

Essential

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
  • ALS/ATLS Provider
  • Broad experience in Emergency Medicine in the UK (Resuscitation/medical/trauma/pediatrics
  • At least 6 months experience at a Senior/Registrar Level in a consultant-led emergency department
  • Confident in reading X-rays and able to manage fractures/dislocations/soft tissue injuries for at least six months at a registrar level.

Desirable

  • Recognized post-graduate certification
  • APLS/PALS provider
  • Life support instructor
  • Ultrasound level 1 signed off.
