Job summary

We are looking for a Specialist Paediatric Diabetes Dietitian to join our growing team based at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. The successful candidate will work within a small team of Paediatric dietitians and will job share a variety of Paediatric Diabetes clinical activities at the RUH.

This is an excellent opportunity to work closely with Paediatric Consultants, Specialist Nurses and other AHPs in the Children's Centre, and across the community settings whilst also having the advantage of being based in a new, purpose built, integrated therapies department.

We have a busy Children's Centre and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and contribute to the care of children and young adults with a wide range of conditions requiring nutrition support, includingCystic Fibrosis, Diabetes, Neonatology, Oncology, Allergies, Coeliac disease and other Complex needs.

The trust strongly supports a commitment to CPD and the Adult Therapy Department has Education Facilitators who support student activity for all our Therapists and Dietitians.

Main duties of the job

The specialist Paediatric Diabetes dietitian job share the dietetic clinical lead for Paediatric diabetes across the Bath community health area. The post holder is responsible for providing highly specialised nutritional and dietetic advice in diabetes on will:

  • Lead on provision of dietetic care to children, young people and families with diabetes across the Bath health community Area.
  • Lead on the dietetic outcomes of care which are required for the Paediatric Diabetes Best Practice Tariff
  • Provides Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes education, to children, young people and families requiring insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitoring and delivering expert clinical care in Paediatrics with Diabetes.
  • Responsible for supervising and providing clinical support to junior paediatric dietitians and - students.

To work as an independent practitioner using an advanced level of knowledge and skills in leading the provision of a highly specialised paediatric dietetic diabetes service to inpatients and outpatients. This includes having sole responsibility in deciding complex dietetic treatment plans for these patients and reducing the need for hospital admissions.

To work within the wider multidisciplinary team across community and acute settings, being a lead team member in the responsibility for key medical decisions with the provision of the specialised dietetic diabetes service.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics or equivalent, acceptable for registration with Health Care Professions Council e.g. BSc Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Evidence of further postgraduate study and continuous professional development to Masters Science Degree level (MSc in Paediatric Dietetics or MSc in Diabetes Care)
  • Clinical Supervisory skills training
  • Further postgraduate study at Masters level (MSc module in Paediatric Dietetics)

Desirable

  • Member of British Dietetic Association & Paediatric Diabetes Sub group (PDSG)
  • Teaching qualification including DAFNE /similar structured education training course
  • Children and Young People with Diabetes module at least 20 credits

Experience

Essential

  • In-depth post registration experience in clinical paediatric dietetics (3-5years) to include working in paediatric diabetes
  • Behaviour change/ motivational interviewing
  • Experience of design, facilitating and reviewing group education.
  • Evidence of participation in clinical governance issues in relation to dietetic practice
  • Evidence of multidisciplinary working
  • Evidence of active participation in audit activities and quality improvement projects in dietetic practice.

Desirable

  • Experience of managing /supporting staff
  • Research experience
  • Experience in complex anthropometric measurements and calculations
