Job summary

The Surgical Outpatient Department delivers a high standard of patient care, minor procedures and interventions. The specialties included are General Surgery, Colorectal, Breast, Vascular, Upper GI and Urology. We see patients from initial consultation through consultations ahead of treatment and follow up appointments after discharge.

The Breast services have one stop clinics where patients have on the day imaging and diagnosis working alongside the Breast Care Nurses and Breast Imaging department to provide a holistic service.

The variety of Urology clinics include a One Stop Service for all new patients where investigations and minor procedures are carried out in the clinics and patients are given a diagnosis and plan of care on the day where required and are seen by the Uro-Oncology team.

In the vascular clinics we undertake simple to complex dressings and wound management, implementing plans of care with the vascular specialist team, podiatrist and patient. Encouraging the patient to be involved in their own care pathway is upmost to the service we offer. We are also now providing a Radio-frequency ablation service for patients in the out-patient setting.

Main duties of the job

Work with all members of the Ward/Department clinical team within the multi-disciplinary framework. Maintain a high standard of patient care under the direction of the Ward/Department Sister/Charge Nurse.

Act as a leader in the clinical area, in the absence of a more senior member of staff. To work in accordance with the principles set out by the Nursing/Midwifery professional bodies and Trust Policies.

Support leaners and junior colleagues, developing learning opportunities where able for both staff, learners and patients.

The following skills and experience will be required and are essential for the successful candidates:

  • Ensure practice is in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and work within limits of competence.
  • To have successfully completed the Trusts preceptorship programme.
  • Maintain a high standard of nursing care applying evidence-based practice.
  • Carry out assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of nursing care without supervision.
  • Carry out the daily personal care of patients.
  • Maintain accurate records of all care given.
  • Update patient administration systems e.g. PAS to ensure real time data collection and confidentiality.
  • To effectively use information technology for the benefit of patient care in accordance with the Trusts Cyber Code of Conduct.
  • To maintain confidentiality of information (written, verbal, electronic), whilst being aware of the Freedom for Information Act.
  • To promptly and effectively communicate relevant changes in patient status to the multi-disciplinary team. To manage the ward/department environment and staffing in the absence of a senior member of staff.
  • To take responsibility for bed management in the absence of a more senior member of staff.
  • Effectively assess and delegate workload according to staff competencies in order to meet patient needs.
