Main duties of the job

PICU is a 14 bedded regional lead centre providing care for critically ill children from birth up to 18 years of age. We care for some of the most complex illnesses and injuries and work closely with specialists from all surgical and medical areas, including cardiac surgery, cardiology, neurosurgery, neurology and neonatology as well as treating major trauma patients. Southampton General Hospital is a designated major trauma centre offering full onsite major trauma provision for both children and adults.

The unit looks after 950 to 1000 patients per year across southern and central England; it is the sixth largest PICU by number of admissions and has one of the best survival rates.

What we are looking for;

  • Experience working in an acute Paediatric care environment.
  • be motivated, enthusiastic and able to work with maturity in pressurised situations.
  • You will be expected to provide safe care of the highest quality to all of our patients and their relatives.
  • The flexibility to work the full range of shift patterns within a 24-hour shift pattern is essential.

Job responsibilities

  • Be a skilled member of the nursing team caring for critically ill patients in a highly complex environment.

  • Provide a high standard of individualised care to the patients in accordance with agreed policies and within available resources.

  • Help create an environment that is conducive to learning and development.

  • To co-operate fully in all PICU, Trust and University based developmental programmes and take responsibility for personal growth in an enthusiastic manner

Physical Requirements

Essential

  • Health and physical abilities sufficient for the post (if necessary with reasonable adjustments with respect to the Equality Act/Disability Discrimination Act).

Qualifications / Training Required

Essential

  • RN Child or equivalent
  • Evidence of on-going personal development.
  • Child Protection and Domestic Violence Awareness.

Desirable

  • Specialist qualification
  • IV Therapy course/skills
  • Recognised teaching qualification

Previous or Relevant Experience Necessary

Essential

  • Post registration experience in relevant speciality. Ward/department management experience.
  • Knowledge of current issues within acute Health Service.
  • Understanding of personal accountability
  • Mentorship experience
  • Awareness of responsibilities for management of infection control
