Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for the role of Matron within our Adult Inpatient Unit at Fair Havens.

The ideal candidate will provide operational, management, and clinical leadership for our Adult Inpatient Service, which currently consists of 10 open beds, and a team of approximately 50 staff.

Principle Responsibilities:

  • To work within and inform the policy framework of the Adult Inpatient Service in the provision of Specialist Palliative and Supportive Care by leading the team in ensuring that the aims and objectives of the organisation are met.
  • The post holder will have a key leadership role at senior level and will provide specialist palliative care knowledge and advanced leadership skills to ensure the delivery of care within the Adult Inpatient Service as part of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT).
  • The post holder will have direct clinical involvement in the care delivered within the Adult Inpatient Service and take 24-hour responsibility for the overall clinical management of the unit in collaboration with the Registered Manager.
  • Act as a role model for all staff working within the Adult Inpatient Service, being present and available and demonstrating a professional and proactive approach, providing clinical advice and support to the team.
  • Direct line management of the Ward Manager, ANPs, and CNSs working within the Adult Inpatient Service, and being expected to role model excellent clinical leadership to the wider team.
  • Act in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct
  • Act as the Lead Patient Safety Specialist for the Adult Inpatient Service, supporting a patient safety culture with clear systems in place to ensure senior management and executive understanding of the issues that may exist, and actions needed to be taken across the hospice in relation to patient safety.
  • Lead in developing a patient and family led service whilst maintaining and improving clinical standards within the Adult Inpatient Service.
  • Identify where existing standards should be updated and highlight new developments in practice to all clinical areas across the organisation.
  • Lead the nursing team on the Adult Inpatient Service to deliver care that meets the CQC fundamental standards.
  • Act as a senior nursing leader within the organisation and as such be involved in the investigation of incidents, supporting peers in other departments, and providing a role model to colleagues across the organisation.
  • The matron will, along with the Ward Manager and all employees within the Charity, encourage and drive equal opportunities and a culture free from discrimination.
  • Accountable for managing the control of expenditure within a defined budget and work with the Head of Adult Services to regularly review productivity and expenditure.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with the NMC
  • Educated to Degree Level

Desirable

  • Masters Degree
  • Patient Safety Qualification
  • Palliative Qualification

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience at a senior level (Band 7 minimum)
  • Demonstrable experience of leadership and management at senior level (Band 7 minimum)
  • Working knowledge of NICE Guidance
  • Demonstrable understanding and experience of CQC standards and inspection routines
  • Demonstrable experience of working with end-of life care and/or palliative care settings

Desirable

  • Experience of working with people requiring mental health support
  • Experience of working with poeple with sensory and learning disabilities
  • Experience in a patient safety role with an understanding of the principles that underpin approaches to improving patient safety.

Key Skills

Essential

  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Knowledge of Health or Social care in all settings e.g. community, nursing homes.
  • Knowledge of patient safety assessment and measures
  • Commitment to clinical excellence through continued professional development

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the national hospice environment
  • Understanding of working within set budgets
  • Ability to interpret patient safety related data
