This exciting post bridges both primary and secondary care rotations, which includes a rotation across The Hillingdon Hospital site and Community Paediatric setting. The post holder will gain experience within a wide range of clinical settings, including The Stroke Unit, community paediatrics, neuro rehabilitation, Frailty, Medicine and Surgery, ITU, elective and trauma orthopaedics.
Within Hillingdon Hospital, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy services are fully integrated, providing an exciting, friendly and supportive environment in which staff are encouraged to develop their full potential. All settings offer undergraduate clinical placements to students from across London and surrounding areas. We recognise that band 5's bring innovative and dynamism to our clinical teams. There will be opportunities to supervise staff, be an educator and have access to both internal and external training.

Your role at Hillingdon Hospital will involve assessing patients' functional abilities and providing appropriate interventions within an acute hospital setting to maximise independence and promote the regaining of functional abilities. We offer undergraduate clinical placement, which you will have the opportunity to be involved in, as well as working with support staff. The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute Hospital in the London Borough of Hillingdon and offers a wide range of services including accident and emergency, inpatient care, day surgery, outpatient clinics and maternity services. Job responsibilities
Main tasks and responsibilities
Clinical
- As part of the multidisciplinary team (MDT), assess the suitability of patients for provision of OT interventions following a referral.
- To carry out specific standardised and non-standardised OT assessment(s) within your designated caseload.
- To plan and implement appropriate intervention programmes in the hospital, home and community environments according to need.
- To ensure ongoing monitoring and evaluation of intervention programmes.
- To act as resource and offer support to patient and relatives / carers.
- To support the delivery of occupational therapy in other clinical areas as appropriate and necessary according to service need.
- Appropriately delegate identified tasks to assistant or support staff.
Communication
- To effectively communicate with patient, their relatives and carers, and all other relevant parties involved with the patients care.
- To maintain the role of OT as a member of the multi-disciplinary team.
- To communicate and liaise, formally and informally, at all times with the team or appropriate others with regards to OT involvement with all patients in the treatment programme.
- To participate in all relevant multi-disciplinary team meetings.
- To attend relevant meetings and feedback to appropriate individuals.
- To participate in presentations to patients regarding occupational therapy interventions e.g. through patient education classes as part of Joint Replacement School.
Documentation
- To ensure that up-to-date written and electronic records and activity data are maintained in accordance with professional and Trust standards and provide specialist OT reports relevant to practice setting.
- To provide formal reports on OT intervention.
Professional ethics
- To keep up to date with current policies and procedures particularly in areas of health and safety.
- To comply with the COT Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and national and local policies and procedures.
Supervision & Performance Review
- To actively prepare for and participate in regular supervision with senior occupational therapists.
- To actively participate in performance reviews, in line with Knowledge & Skills Framework (KSF) outline of post, Trust policies, departmental objectives and relevant local initiatives
Training staff & students
- To share skills/knowledge with peers, students and colleagues of own and other professions, and the wider Multi-disciplinary Team, through formal and informal learning opportunities e.g. shadowing, clinical placements, teaching as appropriate.
Service development & delivery
- To participate in team building exercises.
- To participate in identified working groups to address service development.
- To represent and promote the OT Service.
- To assist in promotion of OT, its value and role.
Professional development
- To keep up to date with current knowledge and practices in the area of OT, both generally and related to your current rotation.
- To actively seek opportunities to develop skills and knowledge base in line with current KSF, CPD and personal development requirements.
- To demonstrate ongoing personal and professional development through ongoing participation in relevant development opportunities, recording learning outcomes in a portfolio.
Clinical governance
- To contribute in the Trusts Directorates and Teams clinical governance arrangements and quality agenda, including the setting and monitoring of practice standards and participation in departmental audits and improvement practices.
- To attend and adhere to all relevant Trust mandatory and statutory training.
- To apply national guidelines/legislation relating to Health & Social Care in Service provision.
Departmental Responsibilities
- To participate in relevant administrative routines.
- To participate in identified activities, which contribute to the smooth running of the department/ clinical area, including cross covering of clinical responsibilities.
- To monitor and notify supplies and equipment needs in area of rotation.
