This is an exciting time to join an established Medical Education Team at a specialist Trust that places the development of medical education as one of its top strategic aims.

Being the only standalone Neuroscience hospital in the country, The Walton Centre's vision is 'Excellence in Neuroscience' and this filters down into the highly specialised teaching and education that our medical students and doctors in training receive.

The Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced manager to support the delivery of medical and academic education programmes at the Trust, working across a complex system with diverse stakeholders (clinical, non-clinical and academic colleagues) and at many levels.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be accountable to the Director of Medical Education. They will work directly with the Trusts senior academic leads supporting the development and implementation of the Medical Education agenda. Responsible for the delivery of all undergraduate and postgraduate medical training throughout the Trust, including responsibility for planning, delivery and evaluation of teaching activities, training programmes, training placements and induction for all postgraduate trainees and medical students.

These are the 4 main areas of work within Medical Education; the post holder will be expected to have oversight of all relevant areas to ensure effective coordination and deliver to agreed timescales:

1. Management of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Education

2. Governance and Quality Assurance of Medical Education, aligned to outcomes of the regulatory bodies

3. Developmental support for Educators and trainees

4. Relationship management academic networks including horizon scanning and advancement

Role Summary

The post holder will support the delivery of medical and academic education programmes at the Trust, working across a complex system with diverse stakeholders (clinical, non-clinical and academic colleagues) and at many levels.

Endorsing an open culture that focuses upon improving quality, innovation, education and training, the post holder will foster close working relationships with a variety of colleagues. Collaborative working is central to this role and the Medical Education Manager will develop high level relationships internally and externally, working with key stakeholders including NHSE, the GMC, Royal Colleges and HEIs.

Supporting the Director of Medical Education to fulfil the requirements of the Education Contract between NHS England and the Trust, by ensuring junior doctors and medical students are educated and trained to a high and consistent standard. The role involves the management and facilitation of undergraduate medical student placements, postgraduate training, trainer support, educational governance and quality assurance of placements and programmes.

The postholder will provide professional services support for the Director of Medical Education to enable the implementation of the Medical Education substrategy. They will support the development of programmes, major change projects and related activity within the trust. The Medical Education Manager will be required to work autonomously, with close support from the Director of Medical Education and related clinical colleagues and, with medical education forming part of the wider Education Department, the postholder will work within a supportive team.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

SERVICE DELIVERY

Support the Director of Medical Education to manage the academic and medical education programme on a day to day basis. This will include regulatory compliance and appropriate performance KPIs.

Work closely with lead clinical educators, developing viable programmes of high quality medical education.

Ensure regular communication between clinical and managerial teams across WCFT to ensure educational quality data is transparent and understood, working

with educational leads to ensure action plans are in place to improve quality of the

learning environment/experience for undergraduate and postgraduate learners.

Lead relationship management and coordinate overall engagement with associated external academic stakeholders, including NHSE, HEIs and the GMC

Work closely with the Director of Medical Education in monitoring and quality assuring medical education to meet the standards and requirements of the GMC and education commissioners for both post graduate and undergraduate programmes.

Taking a lead in the organisation of all related quality assurance and management, including internal and external reports, data collection systems and analysis and organisation of all quality monitoring visits and subsequent action plans

Supporting the DME to organise a robust regular Medical Education Committee and taking the lead on ensuring the meeting is appropriately administered and managed

Lead for junior doctor induction and all related activities, including streamlining

Lead on the reporting of Medical Education outcomes/KPIs presenting reports directly to the Research Innovation and Medical Education Committee.

Establish sustainable techniques for improving access to post graduate education.

Support the Director of Medical Education to fulfil the requirements of the Education Contract between NHSE and the Trust

Oversight of all relevant teaching programmes, including the development of the SAS doctor faculty

Events management, including the full organisation of The Walton Centre led events, such as the annual Sutcliffe Kerr lecture

EDUCATOR DEVELOPMENT & SUPPORT

Provide managerial direction for the trained faculty of educational supervisors and other supervisors working to GMC standards for educator development and support.

Ensure records are maintained, relevant systems are managed and that all consultant education supervisor job plans are reviewed annually.

MANAGERIAL/LEADERSHIP

Provide management and supervision to the Medical Education Team, ensuring alignment between Trust strategic ambitions and team objectives and staff development. This will involve full management responsibility including (but not limited to) training and development (including mandatory training), performance development reviews, disciplinary and grievances (should they arise), day to day pastoral care and management guidance and supervision.

Support the development of the skills and abilities of the medical education team members and ensure links with other teams, to encourage knowledge sharing and learning about transformation, innovation and improvement

Work closely with the Finance Department to enable the understanding of financial income, Education Tarriff and support the management of the medical education budget.

Implementation and management of income generation workstreams and oversight of spend of medical education monies.

Education Centre support.

Deputise for the Senior Education Manager as required.

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent professional qualification or experience.

  • Knowledge of budget management and procurement.

  • Track record of autonomous working and ability to make decisions
  • Proven ability to work with complex policy requirements and support the development of practical processes.
