Applications are invited for the
post of Consultant in Acute Medicine working across the Emergency Admissions
Units (EAU) and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Units at both Sunderland Royal
Hospital (SRH) and South Tyneside District General Hospital (ST).
As a Consultant in Acute Medicine, you
will be responsible, in conjunction with his/her colleagues, for maintaining a
comprehensive Acute Medicine service to the populations of Sunderland and South
Tyneside and others choosing to use the Service. The Acute Medicine physicians will share
responsibility for the Emergency Admissions Units and for medical patients seen
in the Same Day Emergency Care Units.
At SRH we have a 26 bedded admission
unit and same day emergency care is provided in a new purpose-built unit
adjacent to the Emergency Department. We
have a 28 bedded admission unit at ST and the same day emergency care unit is
co-located within the Emergency Department.
We have completed a significant
reconfiguration of services and structural rebuild including development of a
newly developed Same Day Emergency Care Unit incorporating purpose-built
treatment rooms and Point of Care Ultrasound facility. The
department has also recently Implemented
paperless systems, incorporating electronic prescribing, order entry, decision
support and referral to rapid access clinics has been enhanced by the
introduction of the most up-to-date MEDITECH system.
Main duties of the job
As a Consultant in Acute Medicine, you
will support, collaborate, and contribute to the clinical leadership within
acute medicine, including Trust Board-level collaboration. You will also
participate in the coordination and delivery of the strategic and operational
aspects of the Emergency Care Services across Sunderland and South
Tyneside. These will reflect National
and Local priorities including the strategic direction of the Trust and the
Directorate of Emergency Care. Clinical
assessment is by a team of medical staff and acute medicine nurse practitioners
under the direction of an Acute Physician.
The post holder is expected to possess
Membership/Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and to be on the GMC
Specialist Register at the time of taking up the post. It is desirable that the post holder has
completed sub-specialty training in Acute Medicine to CCT (or within 6 months
of obtaining CCT). Other candidates
possessing or within 6 months of registration in GIM (equivalent to level 2 GIM
training) and another medical specialty will be considered for a shared post in
agreement with the relevant Clinical Director for that specialty.

acute medicine consultants alongside the provision of acute medicine services.
