The Orthopaedic Surgery Department at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust seeks applications for Post CCT Hip Arthroplasty Fellows to fill the period from October 2024 to October 2025 with the potential to start earlier and extend. You will join a team of 22 Registrar/Clinical Fellow grade trainees and 12 Senior House Officers/Trust Doctors. You will be expected to provide an orthopaedic and trauma service in conjunction with colleagues. You will be working on the Hip Unit at Guy's Hospital covering primary and revision arthroplasty. This post is suitable for a post CCT surgeon wishing to expand their primary, complex primary and revision hip replacement experience. The candidates will be expected to participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care, including an out of hours commitment. You will also be expected to take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training and contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development

Main duties of the job

To provide high quality orthopaedic services to the Trust patients including the development of the service.

To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care, including theatres, clinics and wards.

To participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training

To gain further experience and develop an expertise in the management of orthopaedic conditions.

To participate in a relevant research project and audits.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

A range of specialised surgery is undertaken across both sites and the successful applicant will be encouraged to attend these sessions in order to develop a broad interest in all aspects of orthopaedic hip surgery and to further their medical training.

You will be expected to actively participate in the departments audit and clinical governance activities with appraisal.

The postholder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of specialist orthopaedic services to the Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust to include:

(a) Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.

(b) Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.

The post will be working over both Guys and St Thomas sites and it is a requirement of your employment that you be prepared to work at any additional or different location owned or served by the trust, on an on-going or temporary basis according to the demands of the service. This post currently involves on call work, including weekend and evening working, either within the basic working hours or via supplementary payment.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training:

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration
  • FRCS (Trauma and Orthopaedics)
  • ST7/8 or post CCT or equivalent

Desirable

  • Higher degree

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Comprehensive clinical experience in orthopaedics and of the services provided at GSTT relating to this field (a validated logbook must be included with the application).

Desirable

  • Previous hip fellowship

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team. Ability to carry out routine primary hip replacement independently.

Desirable

  • Previous surgical experience

Research:

Essential

  • Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research

Desirable

  • Evidence of original research

Teaching

Essential

  • Experience of undergraduate teaching and post graduate training

Desirable

  • Teaching qualification
  • Evidence of participation in the development of clinical services.

Management:

Essential

  • Evidence of understanding of the role of clinical management

  • Management training or qualification
  • Evidence of leadership in the development of clinical services

Other:

Essential

  • Evidence of understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the General Medical Council
  • Evidence of contribution to effective clinical audit and clinical risk management
