Would you like the opportunity to work as a Consultant Paediatrician in Community Child Health? We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic Community Consultant Paediatrician to join our Community Specialist Children's Service at Alexandra Avenue clinic based in Harrow.

This is an ideal opportunity for a driven Paediatrician to complement our team of supportive and experienced community Paediatricians in improving the health and well-being of children, young people and families in Harrow.

You will be on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

This is a full time post and it has been advertised following retirement of the previous post holder and includes responsibilities in neurodevelopmental paediatrics and safeguarding. There is opportunity to take up the role of named doctor for safeguarding children or develop specific neurodisability interests, such as complex epilepsy management (with support from epilepsy nurse).

The team has a strong commitment to training and personal development, so the post holder will be expected to participate in the teaching and training of all professional groups within the Child Health Service.

Currently the team also contributes to the hospital paediatric Grand rounds and epilepsy meetings, the neurodisability meetings at GOSH and the bi-monthly joint teaching with Brent community paediatrics. Post holder will participate in these as their SPA sessions allow, and contribute to audit activity and the clinical governance work of the specialty of Community Paediatrics.

Job responsibilities

Participate in the diagnosis and management of children with a range of neurodevelopmental difficulties including ASD and ADHD

To provide assessment and case management of children and young people with complex neuro-disability and special needs. The Consultant has overall responsibility for their own caseload,

Share multidisciplinary team assessments and meetings as required.

Provide clinical input to multi-disciplinary clinics/meetings for the assessment of children with complex disability and special needs.

Participate in the Child Protection rota in conjunction with other consultants

Participate in providing medical input for SEN

Provide clinical supervision to paediatric registrars

To contribute to the training of GP trainee rotations and FYI from Northwick Park who come for weekly placements.

Teaching and training within the multidisciplinary service

Active involvement in multidisciplinary team meetings and directorate clinical governance activity

Active participation in continuing medical education

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

  • MRCP, MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
  • On the GMC specialist register in Paediatrics or Community Paediatrics or within 6 months of CCT.

Desirable

  • Higher degree (MD, PhD etc)
  • CCT in community child health

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with multi- disciplinary teams within community settings
  • Broad range of clinical experience in Paediatric Community Medicine
  • 5 years Higher Specialist Training, including 3 years in Community Paediatrics
  • Specialist experience in one or more particular areas of CCH practice.
  • Child Protection Medical experience during level 3 (or higher) training

Desirable

  • Experience in other areas relevant to child health e.g. general practice, child mental health, obstetrics, public health

Knowledge and skills

Essential

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively
  • Experience of teaching Undergraduates and Trainees
  • IT Skills and computer literacy
  • Knowledge of interagency working and systems i.e. social care and education.

Desirable

  • Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised and make decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a multi-disciplinary team
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively e.g. report writing; thesis

Academic / Teaching

Essential

  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff

Desirable

  • MD or PhD
  • Evidence of on-going interest and achievement in research
  • Training in research methodology.
  • Presentations at National or International meetings.
  • Publications in Peer-reviewed journals

Management and Audit

Essential

  • Understanding of management issues including medical management; clinical governance, service planning
  • Understanding the principles of clinical governance and its implications
  • Understanding and experience of audit

Desirable

  • Evidence of service audit, design or change management.
  • Have developed guidelines for departmental clinical use.
  • Proven record of multiagency working in paediatrics or an allied field.
