Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust are looking to recruit a Clinical Psychologist to work with older people with complex mental health difficulties in the Eastleigh, Romsey and New Forest East OPMH CMHTs three days a week and on an OPMH functional in-patient service at the Melbury Lodge, Winchester, two days a week.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be based at Newtown House, Eastleigh with the community mental health team. The service provides care to older people with mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, personality disorder and psychosis, as well as for people with dementia and their carers. The two days in the in-patient unit will include assessment and therapy and also assisting in an exciting training initiative to upskill the inpatient staff team.

The responsibilities will include the provision of psychological assessment (including neuropsychology) and therapy to older people and their carers in community, clinic and an inpatient setting, to be a source of advice to the multi-disciplinary team on psychological issues and to offer consultation and advice to other mental health and physical health professionals. Supervision of a clinical psychology trainee and contribution to service development will also be required for candidates at 8a level. Candidates who have an interest in neuropsychology will have an opportunity to develop these skills further.

Job responsibilities

There are currently 7 Clinical Psychologists working with older people in the Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust who meet regularly. There are close working relationships with Adult Mental Health Services and the University of Southampton, which is the base for the Doctorate of Clinical Psychology Course. There are opportunities to be involved in teaching trainee clinical psychologists and for collaboration with other professional tutors, academic staff and research.

Opportunities for a Band 7 to develop or a Band 8a role with responsibilities adjusted accordingly.

To work as an autonomous, independent practitioner responsible for own work and intervention and for the interpretation of agreed guidelines and policies in providing a highly specialist Psychology service.

To undertake complex assessments and consultancy, providing expert advice to Psychological Services colleagues and the wider clinical multi-professional team.

To provide specialist treatment for complex cases and plan and prioritise own clinical workload.

To comment and propose change to policy or service development within the area psychological service and team.

To provide specialist supervision for trainee psychologists and to provide psychological guidance and supervision for multidisciplinary clinical colleagues.

To undertake research and development and develop and encourage a research culture within the wider clinical team.

To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research.
