Main duties of the job

We have a new and exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Sonographer to join our team at UHS.

The Ultrasound service operates 6 days a week 0800-1800 providing a wide range of ultrasound imaging examinations at UHS and at our satellite site Royal South Hampshire Hospital.

All of our ultrasound rooms are equipped with the latest GE machines to help in the assessment of the wide variety of imaging we perform.

The posts available would suit experienced, hard working sonographers who are interested in developing both clinical and leadership skills. We are looking for professional individuals who are forward thinking with great patient and team working skills. All candidates must have a suitable graduate qualification in Medical Ultrasound (PgC, PgD, MSc) and have current HCPC registration.

Our Sonographers undertake clinical work within established quality standards of practice, adhering to Ultrasound guidelines such as those published by BMUS, RCOG, RCR and NICE. The post-holder will work within departmental protocols as a practitioner in the delivery of all ultrasound imaging, reporting and signposting for further management of the patient.

This post benefits from a Recruitment and Retention payment of £5,000 (Yearly renewal subject to Finance Department agreement)

Job description

Job responsibilities

Your day to day work will be as part of a team of Specialist Sonographers, Consultants and Registrars providing a wide range of general surgical, gynaecological, Musculoskeletal and vascular ultrasound examinations.

The role will include involvement in relevant multidisciplinary team meetings, ultrasound modality management meetings and the Sonographer and SpR training programme. Suitable candidates will be considered for further training and CPD opportunities in line with service developments and needs.

The role involves an element of managerial and governance responsibilities with department management duties being shared across the Sonography team.

This post will suit an individual who can lead changes in practice in line with current and upcoming guidelines and initiatives. Role expansion is actively encouraged and supported. You will inspire confidence in colleagues and play a central role in ensuring that the ultrasound service achieves excellent status in the region.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Ultrasound
  • Appropriate Professional Registration e.g. HCPC, RCT or NMC Registration
  • Appropriate relevant Degree or equivalent
  • Appropriate post qualification experience in an ultrasound department
  • Relevant clinical courses
  • Completed the preceptorship and capability framework for sonographers'
  • Quality assurance supervision and practice
  • Sound knowledge of all areas of Governance including H&S, COSHH, Manual Handling
  • Experience of teaching, mentoring and supporting colleagues training and development
  • Be able to interpret clinician's requirements, to recognise the urgency of ultrasound requests, prioritise requests and determine the appropriate scanning technique, ensuring that scans are performed in accordance with best practice and research-based evidence.
  • To interpret scans and provide a comprehensive, independent, diagnostic report on the patient's condition and make the appropriate diagnosis
  • Leadership or management course or qualification or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
