Job summary

We are looking for enthusiastic and committed Consultant Anaesthetists to join the team of Consultants in the Anaesthetic Department at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust. Anaesthetics is part of the Directorate of Anaesthesia, Theatres and Critical Care. Both ICU units have received the rating of Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission.

These are posts in general anaesthesia based at Wexham Park Hospital and the Heatherwood Hospital with the opportunity to subspecialise in acute pain, Obstetrics, Orthopaedics & Trauma, Regional, and colorectal anaesthesia dependent on individual interest and training. The posts have arisen due to retirements and service expansion.

We are keen to foster individual interests within Anaesthesia, including research and quality improvement ambitions and will encourage continued development within a job planning review and appraisal.

Main duties of the job

The Anaesthetic Department at Wexham Park Hospital

The Anaesthetic Department (Wexham Park and Heatherwood sites) is staffed with 36 WTE consultants, 2 specialist Grades, 12 Specialty doctors and roughly 23 trainees. Our directorate has been awarded the ACSA accreditation by the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

A new theatre complex at Wexham Park has six new and three upgraded theatres, including two obstetric theatres; this suite has a video-link to the John Lister Postgraduate Centre and has a seminar room and on call rooms within the complex. There is also an operating theatre located in the delivery suite, which has itself just been modernised.

Successful candidates with interest in trauma anaesthesia will have the opportunity to work along with the present consultant anaesthetists covering Trauma anaesthesia. There are ample opportunities to participate in Quality improvement projects and teaching in the WPH Regional Ultrasound course and teaching/training of trainees.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Successful applicants will be expected to take part in developing services within the Trust and to share the clinical, administrative and teaching work with the other consultants in the department. Participation in clinical audit is a requirement and an ongoing activity in both Departments. Clinical research projects are encouraged.

These are full time 10 PA posts which include 1.5 PAs of SPA but any candidate who wishes to work less than full time will be considered and supported, taking into account service needs. Additional sessions may be available on request. The post will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of the new Consultant Contract (2003). The non resident out of hours on call commitment involves covering CEPOD theatres, labour ward and other emergencies in the hospital. In addition to appraisal, the job plans of all consultants will be reviewed at least annually in conjunction with the Chief of Service and the Associate Director.

Representative timetable/Job plan

The proposed timetable and PA allocation are indicative of the work required but is not rigid and will be flexible depending on service needs and the base specialty of the applicant. A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and Chief of Service on behalf of the Medical Director within three months of appointment.

The job plan will then be reviewed annually and covers all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it will include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.

So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties, the post holder undertakes to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues, this includes short periods of annual leave, sick leave, study and professional leave on a quid pro quo basis. Paid backfill is provided in exceptional circumstances. On occasions Consultants may be requested to perform additional duties in emergencies or unforeseen circumstances or convert SPA time to Direct Clinical Care.

The Trust is organised into Clinical Directorates.

The Directorate of Anaesthesia, Theatres and Critical Care spans all three sites and is led by:

The Medical Director of the Trust is Dr Timothy Ho and the Interim Chief Executive Officer is Ms Caroline Hutton.

Teaching, audit and research

The Anaesthetic departments offer an active teaching programme for junior anaesthetists. Difficult airway workshops are held annually as well as courses relating to Obstetrics, Human Factors and Regional anaesthesia. Consultants also provide tutorials for those junior staff preparing for examinations. Participation in Clinical Audit is a requirement and an on going activity in this department. Research activity is encouraged and supported by the Trust Research and Development Department. Attendance at the monthly educational day is part of the SPA and staff are expected to attend with the exception of those providing emergency care cover and those on leave.

There is a focus on the use of simulation based training with SIM suites and SIM fellows.

Continuing Professional Development

The post holder will be expected to keep themselves fully up to date with their relevant area of practice. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate personal development needs. The post holder is expected to meet the Continuing Professional Development requirements of the RCoA.

The Trust currently makes a financial contribution in support of these activities up to an agreed limit, which is currently £900 per annum.

General information

The appointee will be expected to live within 10 miles or 30 minutes travelling time of their base. A relocation package is available to the successful candidate. You are required to maintain registration with the General Medical Council. Applicants should hold the appropriate qualifications and also be on the GMC specialist register (within 6 months).

All consultants are expected to comply with the Trusts clinical Governance arrangements including participation in clinical audit and annual appraisal.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • Listed on GMC UK Specialist Register or within 6 months of gaining CCT in Anaesthesia from the date of the interview
  • Experience of UK healthcare system, previous NHS experience
  • Clear evidence of commitment to relevant subspecialty

Desirable

  • Trauma fellowship or experience working in trauma centre
  • Regional anaesthesia fellowship and /or recognised regional anaesthesia post graduate qualification e.g. EDRA
  • Advanced Obstetric training/ fellowship
  • Other Fellowships relevant to post

Experience

Essential

  • A wide grounding during training in all aspects of anaesthesia
  • Willingness to be involved in teaching at under graduate and post graduate as necessary
  • Understand principles and participated in audit activity
  • Understand the principles of Clinical Governance and demonstrate experience of evidence based practice

Desirable

  • Evidence of management of complex medical comorbidities in the perioperative period
  • A special interest in trauma care for high risk anaesthetic
  • Special interest in regional anaesthesia with focus on Education
  • Provider status in ATLS,ALS, EPLS or APLS
  • Quality improvement projects related to main components of this job
  • Relevant research
