Job summary
The Trust wishes to
appoint a dentist responsible for providing clinical care at specialist level
and leadership in the sphere of paediatric dentistry. This person will be the
Trust's internal clinical expert and reference point for paediatric services
and will work with the Clinical Directors and operational managers in each area
to ensure that patients receive the very best care from the Trust.
Reporting professionally
to the (Lead) Clinical Director of Dental services
you will assist with any clinical matters relating to paediatric dentistry and
undertake duties as delegated by the Clinical Director. You will attend relevant external and internal
clinical networks, where necessary initiating and maintaining those networks
This role is largely
clinical but also involves ensuring clinical effectiveness of paediatric dental
services in the Trust.
Main duties of the job
Provision of Paediatric
Dentistry at Specialist level treatment of patients described as Tier 2 to 3a
in the National Commissioning Framework. This will include patients treated
under Inhalation and Intravenous sedation.
Liaising with hospital-based
consultants about the treatment of patients
Supervision of junior
colleagues including students, VTs and those in postgraduate training, as well
as those within Bridgewater.
Treatment and the
planning of treatment for patients treated under GA on Hospital sites- ensuring
there is a consistent and evidenced based approach to treatment planning for
children treated under GA
Providing advice about paediatric
dentistry to colleagues throughout the Trust.
Supporting other
colleagues who are providing paediatric dentistry, both in the CDS and in GDS
with advice.
In addition, activities
in support of ensuring the effectiveness of care- audit, leading and chairing
network meetings and peer review.
Ensuring that National
guidance is translated into clinical practice within the Trust, for example
SDCEP guidelines and those produced by BSPD.
Undertaking appraisals
for those dentists directly involved with paediatric dentistry.
Ensuring the quality of
care for patients treated under GA.
Involvement in research
related to paediatric dentistry.
Attending and actively
contributing on behalf of the Trust, at the Managed Clinical Networks in
Greater Manchester and/ or Cheshire and Merseyside

Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical
The clinical activities undertaken by the post holder will be those necessary to comply with the paediatric dentistry contracts that the Trust holds.
Communication
Communicate effectively with the following:
- Patients, carers, families, and user groups regarding complex clinical issues relating to paediatric dentistry and/or in difficult situations.
- Clinical teams and peers in relation to paediatric dentistry in leadership situations.
- Other health and social care professionals relating to paediatric dentistry.
- Operational managers and corporate services teams in Bridgewater.
Management & Leadership
Provide clinical leadership to paediatric services operating across multiple sites.
Undertake appraisals, personal development plans and job plans for other dentists who provide treatment to special care patients.
Provide advice about:
- The legislative framework (for example in relation to GDC Standards) to support on such matters to other members of the dental team.
- Specialist registration and the provision of specialist and specialised care.
Work with:
- Corporate support services in Bridgewater, for example in dealing with complaints and incidents.
Manage:
- External relationships with senior managerial and clinical colleagues, including Operational Managers in Bridgewater and Commissioning Teams.
Provide support and direct input to:
- Dental Clinical Governance meetings including audit
- Team meetings
- Any other such groups that may be established in Bridgewater.
Professionalism
Provide advice and/or support to colleagues or managers on ethical issues in relation to special care dentistry including interpretation of GDC guidance (Maintaining Standards and CPD requirements.)
Actively participate in and manage others in relation to appraisal, peer review, clinical audit and continuing professional development activities; lead peer review, clinical audit or CPD activities.
Teaching and Training
Organise clinical teaching and supervision programmes for post-graduates in training programmes, or for dentists in training.
Participate in clinical research under the direction of approved and registered research lead and take the lead in clinical research projects falling within your competencies.

Essential
- BDS
- On the specialist list in paediatric dentistry.
- Have a performer number.
Desirable
- MJDF / MFDS / FDS
- Higher degree in a subject of relevance to paediatric dentistry.
- M.Paed or equivalent
- Diploma/ Certificate in Conscious Sedation.
Experience
Essential
- Comprehensive routine and specialised dental care to children including the provision of inhalation sedation and treatment under general anaesthetic.
- Treatment of patients with complex needs including learning disability, physical disability, chronic mental health condition, complex medical history, dental anxiety and substance misuse. This list is not exhaustive.
- Treatment of dental trauma at specialist level.
- Experience of leading clinical audit and or peer review.
Desirable
- Formal leadership training.
- Publication in Peer reviewed journal.
- Research experience.
- Providing clinical leadership
- Treatment of children (12+) under intravenous sedation.
