Job summary

We welcome applications for a Consultant Urological Surgeonto join a rapidly expanding, busy and innovative team of Consultants. As a department we have clear goals to increase our profile in Clinical and Academic Urology. The appointment of this Consultant post would supplement the workload of existing Consultants across the breadth of the specialty, including Core Urology delivered through a high-volume District General Hospital. Particular service priorities are endourology/stone surgery and paediatrics.

Applicants are required to be on the general GMC Register and either on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

The post offered is for a Consultant Urological Surgeon with 10 programmed activities. These sessions will be wherever the Trust delivers its services, but the majority of the work will be at Frimley Park Hospital. With an increased demandto create structures of urinary tract stone service as outlined by GIRFT. The successful applicants will be expected to work with other subspecialists across the Trust to deliver such a service and in a similar way, support the paediatric urology service.

Start Date: For the new post, it is anticipated that the successful applicant will take up the post in or around October 2024.

About us

The Department of Urology has grown rapidly in the last few years and is a member of the Surgical Directorate, well known in the region for providing excellent patient care as well as exceptional training for the specialist registrars and junior doctors. The Department of Urology enjoys close links with The Royal Surrey County Hospital (RSCH), with a weekly joint Specialist MDT for prostatic, bladder, testicular and penile cancers. There is a Specialist Renal Cancer MDT hosted at Frimley Park Hospital and a biweekly remotely accessed cross site stone MDT.

At the brand new, state-of-the-art, Heatherwood hospital in Ascot, we have a dedicated Urology Investigation Unit incorporating sub-speciality clinics, an investigation unit and our five day a week lithotripsy service. Other services provided include flexible cystoscopy, urodynamics, Precision Point prostate biopsies, TULA, PTNS, intradetrusor BOTOX and a tertiary referral service of SYNERGO hyperthermia treatment for bladder cancer.

At present all urology day case and in-patient surgery takes place at Frimley Park Hospital supported by a clinically responsive ITU/HDU team. Additional day case operating lists are soon to start on the Heatherwood site we hope. The Radiology department provides excellent support and its facilities are in the process of being extended and refurbished. There is seven days a week IR support.

Job responsibilities

Please note that any provisional timetable will be flexible, and the post holder will be expected to see new patients and operate on patients from the waiting list. Sessions will be a mixture of fixed and flexible and may require you to work on a Saturday.

The post holder will be expected to see new patients and follow up outpatients whilst maintaining expecting new to follow up ratios, they will be expected to operate on patients from their own and a pooled waiting list and may be required to work at any facility that the Trust owns, leases or manages.

The appointee will have access toclinical administrative support and office facilities.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Possession of CCST or within six months of receipt at the date of interview or equivalent
  • Entry on Specialist Register
  • Evidence of Research Activity or Higher Degree
  • Full GMC registration

Experience

Essential

  • A wide grounding during training of all aspects of Emergency and elective surgery within the speciality of Urology
  • Clinical skills to support cancer diagnostics
  • Understand principles and participated in audit activity
  • Understand the principles of Clinical Governance and demonstrate experience of evidence based practice
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems
  • Ability to demonstrate team working

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates and operative skills to trainee specialists
  • Undertaken research with published papers in refereed journals
  • Ability to demonstrate and participate in the management of change and service development
