Job summary

The Colchester General Hospital, which is part of East Suffolk and North Essex NHS trust, provides acute and rehabilitation services to all stroke patients in the catchment population of approximately 400000. Average stroke admissions is more than 700 per year. The hospital is equipped to provide comprehensive service in all aspects of stroke care. The hospital provides a comprehensive stroke service including 24-hour thrombolysis, 7 day TIA service, stroke follow up clinics and rehabilitation. Patients suitable for thrombectomy are assessed and transferred to tertiary centres for Mechanical thrombectomy. The hospital is equipped with state of the art Artificial intelligence for image processing and transfer. The post holder will support in the care delivery along with developing specialist skills in all the aspects of stroke care.

Main duties of the job

The applicants should be keen to develop specialist skills in the stroke medicine. The post holder will be required to take part in every day clinical care of all the patients admitted in the stroke unit. The postholder is expected to contribute to management of acute stroke including thrombolysis service. There will be a dedicated rota for acute stroke during the working hours shared amongst other available middle grade doctors. He/she would also be providing support for medical cover in the unit and supervise junior doctors and nurses in the unit to provide holistic care of patients. He/she will be involved in participating in multidisciplinary meeting, updating patients and their families about clinical progress. Jobholder will be working in the stroke unit Monday to Friday between normal working hours.

There could be flexibility in the start and finishing time. The trust will expect the post holder to participate in the teaching of medical students attached to the firm.

On-call commitments

This post will not invite on-call but opportunities exist for adhoc locums in medicine and elderly care. The thrombolysis service is currently consultant-led but the postholder is expected to attend thrombolysis call during working hours.

Person Specification
