Job summary

2 WTE (10PA) Consultant posts in Infection Management at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STHFT) and The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust (TRFT) with flexible split-site working providing microbiology services to TRFT and Infectious Diseases services to STHFT. These roles are flexible and candidates with single CCTs in Medical Microbiology (MM) or Infectious Diseases(ID)/General Internal Medicine will also be considered, although the preference is for ID/MM dual CCT. Pathology Services (including microbiology) are provided by South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Services (SYBP) and hosted by STHFT. The roles will be split Microbiology / Infectious Diseases.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job

The appointees will, together with other Consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of providing clinical microbiology, infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship advice for The Rotherham Hospital Foundation Trust and Infectious Diseases based at Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals although with requirement to work at the Northern General site.

Job responsibilities

Provisionally these posts will rotate on a 10 week basis resulting in 20 weeks in Microbiology and 10 weeks in Infectious diseases.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full and Specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • FRCPath part 2 or equivalent qualification
  • MRCP

Desirable

  • MD or PhD or equivalent
  • Higher medical or biomedical degree (MD or PhD, Dip HIV Med)

Research

Essential

  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate

Desirable

  • Publications in Peer reviewed journals.
  • Achievement in research related to Microbiology and/or Infectious Diseases.

Clinical experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable competence in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
  • Ability to practice Evidence Based Medicine

  • Experience of delivering and developing specialised ID services

Teaching and training

  • Experience of teaching student doctors and doctors in training at all levels

Continuous Professional Development
