Job summary

Whole-Time Consultant Ophthalmologist with an interest in Glaucoma & Cataract Surgery to be employed by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will, together with Consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive, effective and modern Ophthalmology service, practising the full remit of the specialty.

They will take his/her equal share in providing sub-specialty cover and will be required to cover for colleagues during periods of absence. He/she will have continuing responsibility for patients in his/her care and the proper functioning of the Department. There will be a requirement to participate in the general Ophthalmology on call rota.

Appointments are made to the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the person appointed is required to be sufficiently flexible to undertake their main clinical duties at any of the sites within the Trust and/or to change their base hospital.

The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the national consultant contract.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full and Specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.

Desirable

  • MD or PhD or equivalent
  • Further qualifications in research methods, teaching and/or management

Clinical experience

Essential

  • Evidence of subspecialist training in Glaucoma and current Glaucoma surgical experience.
  • Ability to work as an independent practitioner.

Desirable

  • Completion of Glaucoma Fellowship
  • Glaucoma surgical experience including MIGS related cataract surgery.
  • Completion of Cataract Fellowship or TSC.
  • Evidence of delivering training of small incision cataract surgery.

Research

Essential

  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems

Desirable

  • Publications in Peer reviewed journals.

Teaching and training

Essential

  • Experience of teaching student doctors and doctors in training at all levels
  • Evidence of past training and on-going CPD as an Educator
  • To have the ability to teach to all groups of staff.

Desirable

  • Advanced Teaching Qualification

Continuous Professional Development

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months

Desirable

  • Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio

Management and Administration

Essential

  • Evidence of the understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management

Clinical governance and audit

Essential

  • Experience in performing clinical audit

Desirable

  • Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project

  • Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values (see appendix)
  • Good oral and written communication skills
