Job summary

Applications are invited for a dentist to join our Special Care Dentistry team. SCD is one of the specialised services provided by the integrated Dental Hospital and Community Dental Services within the Dental Division of BCHC.Based in the Birmingham and Black Country area, you will be working as part of a consultant led team which includes Specialists, Senior Dental Officers and DCPs. There will be an opportunity to develop clinical competencies in all aspects of SCD including basic level IV sedation. This may include DES (Dentist with Extended Skills) status once the relevant requirements are released by the Royal Colleges.

Main duties of the job

This interestingand varied role includesproviding dental care foradults with disabilities, medicaland mental health problemsas wellas severe dental phobia. Italso includes provision of domiciliary careand responsibility for supervising dental students for whichanadditionalallowance will be paid.

You will needagoodawareness of the SCD specialtyand some basic experience of working with theabove patient groups. You will need experiencein oral surgeryideallyattained throughahospital based oral surgery post ofat least 6 months. You willalso need to demonstrate theability to workasateam playerand on your own initiative. You mustalso have full GDC registration, have entered or be eligible to be entered onto the local NHS performers list,and the flexibility toworkat different sites in the Black Countryand Birminghamarea if required

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • BDS or equivalent
  • Vocational training or equivalent if non UK graduate
  • Eligibility for inclusion on NHS Dental Performer List
  • Evidence of relevant continuing education undertaken regularly

Experience

Essential

  • Relevant experience in oral surgery ideally attained through a hospital based oral surgery/maxfax post for at least 6 months or equivalent
  • Relevant experience post qualification in treating adults with disability, medical and mental health problems
  • Relevant experience and interest in working with anxious adults
  • Experience of working on own initiative

Desirable

  • Relevant experience in supervising dentists or DCPs
  • Previous GDS experience
  • Experience of clinical audit

Skills/Knowlegdge

Essential

  • Good knowledge and awareness of the role of Special Care Dentistry
  • Ability to empathise with patients with disability, medical and mental health conditions
  • Ability to form effective working relationships with patients and manage expectations regarding service provision
  • High quality clinical skills maintained through relevant CPD in SCD
  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills (written & verbal)
  • Reflective approach and able to learn from own experiences
  • Team worker
  • Basic IT skills including MS Office and clinical software (R4, SOE etc)

Personal Qualities

Essential

  • Adaptable, flexible and able to work at different sites across the Black Country area as required
  • Access to own transport to be independently mobile across the BCHC area
  • Ability to remain calm and work effectively under pressure
  • Ability to maintain and foster excellent working relationships with colleagues
