Job summary

We are seeking applications for a locum consultant anaesthetist based at the Musgrove Park Hospital site. The post is for a 12-month fixed-term duration. The successful candidate will have a broad-based training in anaesthesia and will have the ability to care for complex patients having major surgeries. The post is offered on a 10 PA basis and includes a commitment to supporting the out of hours emergency anaesthesia services on twilight shifts (18:00 - 22:00).

The successful candidate will join a department of 50 consultants, 10 SAS doctors, and a large cohort of trainees in anaesthesia and intensive care.

Main duties of the job

provision of peri-operative services in anaesthesia across a range of specialties. The precise job plan may be tailored to suit your experience, and in accordance with the needs of the department,

Participating in the teaching and training of anaesthetic trainees, and

Participating in the general activities of consultants in the department, for example governance, administration, quality improvement, professional development, etc.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To contribute alongside the consultant body to an excellent standard of care covering the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and management of patients requiring anaesthetic services as outlined on your job plan.
  • Patient safety to be actively involved in delivering high quality patient centred care and contributing to safety and quality initiatives and improvement projects being undertaken in the trust.
  • Education to supervise and support doctors in training. This will include delivery of teaching sessions and assisting the personal and professional development of our non-consultant staff. It will also include assessment and appraisal of trainees under your supervision with appropriate liaison with Clinical/College tutors when required. The department also supports education of medical students from Bristol and, more recently, Plymouth.
  • Quality Improvement and Audit active participation in QI and audit projects, including initiation and supervision of projects related to your subspecialist interest. Participation in national audits is encouraged. All projects are approved by the Clinical Effectiveness and Audit Committee.
  • Clinical Governance Staff are accountable and responsible for maintaining their own clinical competence and acting within their competence. In addition, they must comply with requirements of their professional organisations regarding supervision.
  • Administration to undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the department.
  • Departmental Activities to contribute and support monthly anaesthetic and ICU departmental meetings.
  • Cover to provide cover for colleagues in their absence and deal with emergencies as the occasion demands.
  • Appraisal/job planning/mandatory training - to fully comply with requirements for annual appraisal and job planning and maintain an up to date mandatory training record.
  • CME to undertake CME to maintain and develop personal professional standards.

Person Specification

Education ,experience

Essential

  • Full GMC registration
  • MBChB, FRCA or equivalent
  • On Specialist register or CCT in Anaesthesia, within 6 months of date of interview
  • ILS / PILS or equivalent
  • Appropriate experience in anaesthetics/critical care to enable job programme to be successfully executed
  • Competent to work without direct supervision where appropriate

Desirable

  • Demonstrates breadth of awareness of issues relating to clinical anaesthesia
  • Evidence of flexible working
  • Experience of organisation and/or management of theatre processes
  • Enthusiasm for teaching Exposure to different groups/teaching methods Higher qualification in medical education
