Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Acute Medical Team at Basildon Hospital delivering day to day care and leadership within 3 Acute Medical Units and SDEC Services.

You will actively contribute to the Trust's Acute Medicine services and support true multi-disciplinary working way in line with the Royal College of Physicians and the Department of Health's strategy for modernising acute care within the NHS. Individual consultants are also trainees' managers and are encouraged to liaise with their managerial and clinical colleagues to resolve operational issues.

Main duties of the job

You will undertake fixed clinical and non-clinical sessions according to an agreed timetable with other members of the Consultant Team.

During clinical sessions, you will be responsible for the care of patients on the Acute Medical Unit's (AMU), and in the Ambulatory Emergency Care service actively taking referrals from ED, GP's, ambulance service and other other specialities within the trust to support admission avoidance and reduced length of stay - all with a designated team of trainee and specialist doctors.

The acute physicians work a fixed group job plan which also includes a 1:8 weekend cover for Acute Medicine and 1:40 weekdays, weekends and bank holiday cover for General internal medicine.

Job responsibilities

You will either be an established Acute Medical Consultant looking for new challenges or a Specialist Trainee approaching CCT who is looking for your first consultant post. You will have full GMC registration or evidence of eligibility for full GMC registration, with appropriate/fellowship training in Emergency/Acute Medicine.

The successful candidate will be a team player with experience and an enthusiasm for Acute Medicine. Experience in SDEC of high acuity patients would be advantageous.

You will support and further develop the Acute Medicine/SDEC service and provide daily reviews of patients, to diagnose, treat and discharge in a safe and timely manner.

The acute medical service is busy, seeing medical acute admissions from both A&E and GP referrals. Usual daily admissions are 40-45 patients a day, with additional activity now managed through our Ambulatory Emergency Care service.

Delivering day to day care and leadership on the Acute Medical Units along with teaching of primary care colleagues and junior medical staff through a combination of case-based reviews and formal teaching activities.

  • MBBS or Equivalent
  • MRCP UK
  • GMC Registered and eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of training (CCT) at time of interview

Essential

  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Acute Medicine and Same Day Emergency Care.
  • Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors and other staff

Desirable

  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research
