The department of Acute Medicine at New Cross Hospital has a longstanding reputation for delivering high quality patient centred care alongside training and education to create an environment that thrives on innovation, teamwork and compassion.

We are looking to further expand our consultant workforce to enable us to strengthen our team to meet the ever-increasing demands on our service and to allow further growth and development.

Main duties of the job

Responsibilities for a senior clinician include the full range of activities routinely undertaken in assessing and managing acutely unwell medical patients.

Alongside covering our acute medical unit, we also provide acute physician cover to our emergency department and work closely alongside our physician colleagues to manage the acute medical take.

Our well established innovative 'Physician A & B' model ensures that there is an acute physician working alongside our emergency medicine colleagues at the front door 14 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The requirement to be part of this team is on a 1:12 day basis.

The Trust also has 56 rehabilitation beds at West Park Hospital and 54 beds at Cannock Chase Hospital.

We provide services from the following locations;

  • New Cross Hospital - secondary and tertiary services, maternity, Accident and Emergency, critical care and outpatients;

  • Cannock Chase Hospital - general surgery, orthopaedics, breast surgery, urology, dermatology and medical day case investigations and treatment (including endoscopy) ;
  • More than 20 community sites - community services for children and adults, walk-in centres and therapy and rehabilitation services ;

Primary care - Ten GP practices have now joined us and offer extended opening hours to patients

Job responsibilities

General

  1. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to provide a service in Acute Internal Medicine.

  1. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to play a full part in the out-of-hours On-Call service for the department. This includes being on-call for telephone advice and major incidents.

  1. To provide cover for Consultant and Senior colleagues in respect of periods of leave.

  1. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take part in medical audit and research as appropriate.

  1. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.

  1. To ensure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • On the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT from the date of interview
  • CESR completed or to complete within 6 months if appointment

Desirable

  • SCE in Acute Internal Medicine

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of managing acutely ill patients on admission to hospital and within the first 24 hours of admission
  • Experience of managing patients in an ambulatory care setting
