Job summary

Liverpool Clinical Laboratories are looking to recruit a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to become part of our Immunology team. We are looking for a confident, enthusiastic and hardworking individual with good communication and team work skills. You will be responsible for performing all aspects of routine diagnostic work. Ideally you will have a specialist diploma in Immunology, and/or be able to demonstrate equivalent specialist knowledge through experience.

Applications from newly HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists are encouraged, and any newly registered candidates would be employed under the Annex 21 Agenda for Change terms and conditions whilst they are working towards their specialist portfolio.

The core hours of the laboratory are 08:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday. The successful candidate will be expected to take part in the out of hours on call service.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to utilise specialist knowledge and skills to operate highly specialist equipment and interpret and report all results.

Professional knowledge and skills are essential to provide guidance to service users when required.

The post holder will be expected to work in all areas of the department and on completion of training will be expected to participate in the on call rota.

The post holder will be expected to maintain highly complex analytical equipment in optimum operational condition and to utilise necessary interpersonal skills to ensure effective liaison with service users and to provide the best care for our patients.

Job responsibilities

To develop the knowledge and expertise necessary to perform specialised investigations / procedures during rotation through the highly specialised laboratory sections associated with Clinical Immunology.

To maintain the knowledge and expertise necessary to perform specialised procedures.

To maintain State Registration with the HCPC

To conform to the HCPC Code of Conduct for Biomedical Scientists and to maintain CPD.

To ensure compliance with departmental Policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which reflect local and national standards of work practice

To interpret technical validity of results, which may be anomalous, incomplete, complex or conflicting, using professional knowledge and experience.

To make technical assessments of method and instrument performance by monitoring quality control used on specialist laboratory methods and analytical systems.

To troubleshoot and carry out maintenance on specialist equipment. To repair specialist equipment when required to do so.

To participate in the development of Standard Operating Procedures when required.

To contribute to the training and / or supervision of support staff and trainee Biomedical Scientists when requested.

To participate in the development and evaluation of new techniques, methodologies and equipment when requested.

To be aware of procedures for working with hazardous chemicals, awareness of COSHH regulations, risk assessments and hazard data sheets.

To be aware of procedures for dealing with potentially infectious materials, awareness of departmental and trust health and safety policies.

To take appropriate remedial action in the event of spillage of hazardous chemicals or bio-hazardous materials.

  • Thorough knowledge and practical experience of specialised procedures within immunology.

Experience

Essential

  • Post registration experience in immunology in a diagnostic medical laboratory.
  • Experienced in fluorescent microscopy
  • Competent to work alone and independently
  • Experience with PCs' and operation of windows based systems.
  • Ability to work well in a busy and challenging team based environment
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Able to use own initiative and work without supervision.

Desirable

  • Experience of audit to CPA standards.
  • Experience of evaluating new methodology and/or technology

Qualifications

Essential

  • B.Sc. (Hons) Biomedical Science Degree.
  • Certificate of Competence
  • Current state registration with the Health Professions council as a Biomedical Scientist.
  • Specialist knowledge in Immunology
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD
  • Specialist Diploma or equivalent in relevant specialty or equivalent experience.

Desirable

  • Specialist qualification in Immunology
