Job summary

Full time and part time position available.

We now have an exciting opportunity for an Educational or Clinical Psychologist to become part of an outstanding and expanding CAMHS service. You will grow your knowledge and skills by becoming part of a small team who assess and diagnose Children and Young People with Neurodevelopmental Disorders. As a specialist psychologist you will enhance a Multi-Disciplinary Pathway which involves, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Clinical Psychology, Educational Psychology, Early Help, Social Care, and Nursing. Ideally you will already have experience of the assessment and diagnostic process for children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders; training will also be available to enhance your skills.

A 7-8a preceptorship would be considered for the right candidate.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will use their skills and knowledge to input into MDT assessments and interventions for young people with potential neurodevelopmental disorders across the age and ability range. The post holder will be expected to work autonomously within their professional guidelines as well as liaising closely with other professionals who work with children and young people, their carers and their families. You will provide consultation to other professionals and supervise less experienced staff. You will offer clinical leadership in respect of psychological aspects of the service, coordination and management, as agreed by the head of the speciality. Undertake audit and research activities, take part in CPD and training and contributes to service development.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To use their skills and knowledge to lead on, and support, all aspects of neurodevelopmental assessments with children and young people, and their families/carers.

To work autonomously within their professional guidelines as well as liaising closely with other professionals who work with children and young people, their carers and their families.

To work independently, as part of a team, and across teams, in partnership with parents, education, social care, voluntary and other health professionals to provide integrated care for clients, their families, carers and educators.

To exercise full responsibility and autonomy for the assessment, support and discharge of a case load of service users, and their carers and families.

To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to the child/young persons formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan.

Offer regular clinical supervision to less experienced staff.

Offer clinical leadership in respect of psychological aspects of the service, coordination and management, as agreed by the head of the speciality.

To meet appropriate standards of practice in the quality and timeliness of the service provided. The standards of practice will include meeting the standards defined by the British Psychological Society (including the Division of Clinical Psychology and the Division of Counselling Psychology where relevant) and Navigo health and social care code of conduct.

To develop and provide a range of specialist clinical psychology assessments and interventions to vulnerable children and young people including Looked After Children; children and young people who have mild to severe Learning Disabilities; children who are at risk of contact with, or who have contact with, the Youth Justice Service.

To formulate and implement plans for the specialist psychological treatment and/or management of children/ young peoples mental health and the presenting problem(s), based upon the appropriate theoretical and conceptual framework of the patients problems, via the employment of methods based upon evidence based practice and efficacy.

To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions for children/young people, carers, families and groups. Adjusting and refining psychological formulations and drawing upon a range of theoretical perspectives and different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.

To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual children/young people and to provide general advice to other professionals on psychological aspects of risk assessment and management.

To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans, and to monitor and evaluate progress during the course of both uni-and multi-disciplinary care.

Communication and relationship skills

A high level of interpersonal skills are needed, including:

Ability to communicate highly complex / sensitive information to service users and their carers and to relevant staff in a constructive and understandable way.

Excellent written communication, including ability to write clear and concise reports.

Ability to deal sensitively and constructively when in highly emotive and/or hostile situations with service users, carers, staff.

Good knowledge of potential barriers to understanding and ability to adjust modes of communication accordingly.

A high level of analytical and judgmental knowledge and skill is required in order to analyse and interpret and compare a range of complex information and options, sometimes conflicting, and make appropriate psychological formulations and provide expert psychological opinion for clinical cases; to provide a psychology service response; for service development.

Ability to use knowledge to inform sound clinical judgements and decision-making for complex cases.

Planning and Organisation

The post holder is responsible for ensuring that the work allocated to them is completed in a timely manner.

Ability to plan and prioritise own client caseload.

Ability to prioritise and organise commitments to meet deadlines.

Physical

Ability to use a range of psychometric test equipment.

Ability to use computer to communicate by e-mail; to keep up-to-date client records and data systems in accordance with the Health Trusts, HCPCs and BPS guidance; to respond to and interpret a range of performance reports and data.

Professional leadership

To represent the service in relationships with other agencies and care providers, and to provide advice and leadership in respect of psychological aspects of client care and service development.

Teaching and training

To provide educational input to other professionals and to the staff of other agencies as required in the interests of children/young people with neurodevelopmental conditions.

To disseminate clinical expertise within Young Minds Matter.

To assist with the provision of placements to Trainee Clinical Psychologists (if a Clinical Psychologist).

Research and service development

To utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research to support evidence-based practice in individual work and work with other team members.

To undertake appropriate research, audit, and service evaluation, and provide advice to other staff undertaking such.

To disseminate research findings in appropriate forums including professional journals and conferences.

To participate in local case discussion and research forums and teaching events.

To provide and assist with the further development of clinical psychology. To propose service developments and changes as appropriate.

Managerial

To manage the workloads of assistant psychologists within the framework of the Specialities policies and procedures.

Clinical Governance

To implement and maintain the principles of Clinical Governance.

To implement and maintain good information governance in respect of British Psychological Society's and Department of Health's codes and guidelines on the proper management of client information, the Caldicott principles and the Data Protection Act.

Administration

Responsible for ensuring the highest standards of clinical record keeping, risk assessment and report writing.

To collect data on referrals, caseloads and activities and submit these as required by the service.

General

To ensure the development, maintenance and dissemination of the highest professional standards and practice, through the active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes.

To ensure the development and articulation of best practice in psychology within the service area and contribute across the service by exercising the skills of a reflexive and reflective scientist practitioner, taking part in regular professional supervision and appraisal and maintaining an active engagement with current developments in the field of clinical psychology and related disciplines.

To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping including electronic data entry and recording, report writing and the responsible exercise of professional self-governance in accordance with professional codes of practice of the Health Care Professions Council, the British Psychological Society and Trust policies and procedures.

To maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies and issues in relation to both the specific client group and mental health.

Essential

  • Demonstrate post qualification experience of working as a Educational/Clinical Psychologist with children and families where there are developmental or psychological concerns.
  • Demonstrate post qualification experience of working with children and young people from pre-school age to school leaving age.
  • Demonstrate post qualification experience of working with children who have experienced abuse.
  • Demonstrate extensive post qualification experience of using a range of specialist psychology assessment skills which include:
  • Use of psychometric assessments of intelligence, memory, reading, social functioning; executive functioning.
  • Use of behavioural assessments.
  • Use of observational methods of assessment.
  • Assessment by interviewing.
  • Assessment by analysis of archive material.
  • Demonstrate post qualification experience of developing and providing specialist Educational/Clinical Psychology interventions and intervention packages for children, young people, and their carers and families.

Qualifications

Essential

  • BPS accredited Honours degree in Psychology or equivalent, at a 2:1 or above.
  • A Doctorate in Clinical or Educational Psychology, accredited by the BPS and HCPC
  • Registered member of HCPC
  • Additional specialist training related to working with children, young people and their families and carers.
  • Clinical supervision training for doctorate trainees
  • Eligible for chartered status as a clinical psychologist

Desirable

  • Trained in assessment tools relevant to this post (e.g. ADOS)
  • Other related academic qualifications to Masters or Doctorate level.

Skills & Attributes

Essential

  • Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of clinical psychology.
  • Knowledge of relevant child protection, safeguarding and mental health legislation and its implications for clinical practice when working with children, young people and their families/carers.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as stated by HCPC and as recommended by the BPS.
