Job summary

Applications are invited for the Consultant in Cardiology post. This post is within the Cardiology Department - Acute and Emergency Medicine (AEM) care group of the Royal Cornwall Hospital,

Truro. We are currently a team of 11 substantive full-time Cardiologists, 1 part-time substantive consultant and 2 NHS Fixed Term Locums. We aim to employ 2 further substantive Cardiologists to take us to 15 full-time Consultants delivering the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Cardiology service.

This post is principally designed to support delivery of non-interventional Cardiology services, specifically Cardiac Imaging, Inherited Cardiac Conditions and Heart Failure and devices. A combination of either is appropriate. Applicants should have a broad training in all aspects of Cardiology. The candidate will be expected to take part in the General Cardiology service on the wards and in out-patients.

Applicants are required to be on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share, while recognising that the full-time post attracts up to a 12 PA job plan.

Main duties of the job

The on-call rota is manned by 7 Interventional Cardiologists only with no separate General Cardiology on-call. The non-interventional Cardiologists deliver comprehensive weekend ward rounds including visits to the Acute Medical Unit to review new referrals. There is no general medical commitment.

Inpatients are managed on CIU and Roskear wards and the CCU, although there are also outlying patients. The Cardiologists are responsible for the clinical management of all patients on the CCU and CIU and cardiology patients on Roskear.

During this week, you will have responsibility for the clinical management of patients on CCU and CIU all day on Mondays and in the mornings for the rest of the week, with cath lab sessions and/or outpatient clinics in the afternoon.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • GMC Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining CCT (or equivalent) at time of interview.

Desirable

  • Higher degree, e.g. MD or PhD

Experience

Essential

  • Contemporary experience in managing general and acute Cardiology
  • Competency in one or more of the following : Cardiac imaging such as TOE/Stress echo/CTCA/CMRI, Competency in the management of Arrhythmia and expertise in Electrophysiology (EP) and Devices, Competency in the management of Inherited cardiac Conditions (ICC). Competency in Bradycardia pacing and Complex devices.

  • Management course
  • Teaching experience (medical students, peers, MDT)
  • Experience in clinical audit and clinical governance and understanding the benefits of how this improves the quality of care provided to patients and ensuring this is embedded in clinical practice.

Practical and Intellectual skills (including any special Knowledge)
