Job summary

Compass is the provider of Mental Health Support Teams (MHST) in education settings in the city of Derby and Derbyshire, and recently expanding the service into new areas with two new MHSTs in January 2024. We have an opportunity for a Mental Health Practitioner to join our Bakewell MHST.

Main duties of the job

The service supports CYP and families providing extra capacity for early intervention support within school and college settings in three core areas:

  • Providing evidence-based interventions for mild to moderate mental health and emotional wellbeing issues
  • Supporting designated senior mental health leads in each setting
  • Providing timely advice to school and college staff and parents as required

You will need to demonstrate in your application that you have a core MHP qualification relevant to mental health, alongside post graduate experience working with children and young people and an understanding of the principles and practice of CBT and clinical supervision.

You will be knowledgeable and experienced in working with CYP with mental health needs; completing mental health assessments, providing practice supervision and support as well as providing specialist care directly to children and young people and families.

Applicants must have excellent communication skills and be able to network with other agencies as central to the role.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The role of the Mental Health Practitioner (MHP) is to improve access to high quality mental health support to children and young people in education settings.

With appropriate supervision the MHP will deliver evidence-based interventions to children and young people with mild to moderate mental health needs.

The MHP also provide advice, guidance and signposting to education staff and will support Senior Mental Health Leads in education settings to develop their Whole School Approach.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Core professional qualification relevant to mental health e.g. CWP IAPT, PMHW, nursing with specialism in mental health or learning disability nursing, Occupational Therapy, Social Work or Professional qualification relevant to mental health e.g. CBT therapist.
  • Evidence of continued professional development

Desirable

  • Teaching qualification
  • Youth Mental Health First Aid trained
  • Therapeutic post graduate qualification (preferably in CBT).

Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of educational environments
  • Knowledge of safeguarding issues
  • Knowledge of capacity and consent issues including Gillick competence
  • Experience of working with children and young people, their families and others
  • Experience of working and liaising with a wide variety of agencies and stakeholders
  • Experience of working with children and young people who have social, emotional and/or behavioural difficulties
  • Experience of working with anxiety disorders
  • Experience of working with affective (mood) disorders
  • Experience of the delivery of specific therapeutic interventions to children, young people or their families (e.g. CBT, solution focused brief therapy

Other Criteria

Essential

  • Ability to carry out 1:1 therapeutic mental health interventions with children
  • Ability to carry out 1:1 therapeutic mental health interventions with families
  • Ability to work within educational settings to increase mental health awareness within staff group
  • Ability to conduct mental health assessments of children and young people
  • Ability to make an assessment of risk and to record and communicate it appropriately
  • Ability to take appropriate action to mitigate or manage risk
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Access to own transport or evidence of ability to commute efficiently between community venues
  • Ongoing commitment to maintain registration in core profession
  • Willingness to study further if required

  • Ability to conduct other group therapeutic interventions with children and their families
  • Proven commitment to continuous professional development
