Applications are invited for the post of part-time Consultant in Orthodontics based at Wexham Park Hospital, Slough and Heatherwood Hospital, Ascot part of the Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust.

This is a part-time post of up to 6 PAs with the opportunity to pick up further sessions in the future. The successful applicant(s) will join a busy and innovative team, where the emphasis ison multidisciplinary care especially orthognathic in a combined department with Oral and Maxillofacial. There isan integral laboratory on the Wexham Park site as well asfull office support, and a completely new hospital at Heatherwood. In addition, there is a regular outreach clinic held with the visiting regional cleft lip and palate service based at Wexham Park Hospital. Consultant Orthodontists who work on Friday are expected to attend this clinic.

The Trust is looking to appoint a suitably experienced clinician/clinicians who will add value to the department and seeks applications from candidates with demonstrable expertise in secondary care orthodontics. The candidates must have full GDC registration and be on the GDC orthodontic specialist list having successfully completed a further SAC approved minimum 2-year training post CSST/ISFE or equivalent.

Main duties of the job

This is a part-time post, designed to complement the duties of the existing Orthodontic clinicians, based at Wexham Park Hospital, Slough and Heatherwood Hospital, Ascot. The post holder will see patients in outpatient clinics and carry out treatment sessions on a range of malocclusions particular to secondary care, involving fixed and removable orthodontic appliances. Within this post there will be an opportunity to both build capacity and expand inter-specialty services such as orthognathic care in conjunction with the current Consultant Orthodontists and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. New patient referrals are predominantly from the primary care specialist practices within the area.

There is no on-call commitment.

The post holder would be expected to work flexibly according to the demands of the service.

The post holder would be expected to attend the monthly Academic Half-Day programme at Wexham Park Hospital, as well as the Departmental Clinical Effectiveness meetings. Active participation in medical audit and CPD is essential. The post holder would be expected to keep fully up to date with their relevant area of practice subject to appraisal. Although GDC registrants are not required to have an annual appraisal similar to GMC requirements, an appraisal is required in line with trust policy as a PDP is mandatory.

About us

The principal department is located at Wexham Park Hospital, Slough. It is adjacent to the ENT department and consists of 3 surgery rooms, a fully equipped and staffed laboratory, offices and secretarial base. Imaging, pathology and A&E are located nearby. At the new Heatherwood Hospital, there is one surgery.

Out-patient clinics are held at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough or Heatherwood Hospital in Ascot. The Joint Orthognathic clinics with the Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon are held on alternate Mondays at Wexham Park. Day surgery lists are performed at both the Wexham Park and Heatherwood sites.

All elective In-patient surgery and all trauma/emergency cases are accommodated at the Regional Centre for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery based at Northwick Park Hospital, approximately 15 miles away.

A fully equipped and staffed laboratory is located within the department at Wexham Park Hospital, providing a complete range of orthodontic appliances. The maxillofacial technician also participates in the OMFS on-call rota with other technicians within the network.

The department is managerially part of the Clinical Directorate of Specialist Surgery, which also includes ENT. Close links are maintained with other hospital departments, and the department provides support for other specialities.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC)FRCS or equivalent
  • On the GDC Specialist List in Orthodontics
  • Membership in Orthodontics, or equivalent
  • Possession of a Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCST in Orthodontics

Desirable

  • Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Exit Examination in Orthodontics, or equivalent, before commencing consultant post.
  • Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, or equivalent.

Training

Essential

  • Successful completion of an SAC-approved 2 year minimum training programme in a Fixed Term Training Appointment (FTTA) in Orthodontics, or within 6 months of completion of training, or equivalent which follows on from the pre-CCST training period of 3 years, or equivalent

  • Successful completion of a SAC-approved 3 year minimum training programme in Orthodontics
