Job summary
We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a Locum Paediatric Nephrologist who is passionate about excellence of clinical care to join us in leading a dynamic and highly skilled multidisciplinary team to deliver comprehensive renal care to children across the North East and Cumbria (population 3.2 million). This opportunity has arisen due to the leave of absence of a consultant colleague for a period of 6 months.
The Great North Children's Hospital (GNCH) is one of thirteen designated centres for paediatric nephrology in the UK and is one of ten centres providing paediatric renal transplantation. The nephrology team provides essential expertise to subspecialties including the supra-regional paediatric cardiac transplant and immune deficiency bone marrow transplant services. Numerous specialist renal clinics are provided at GNCH as well as regular clinics with paediatric colleagues in hospitals across the region.

Main duties of the job
To provide expert opinions on patients with a wide range of acute and longstanding complex paediatric nephrology problems, taking responsibility for the clinical care of secondary and tertiary patients referred to the centre.

Job responsibilities
Clinical: Management of acute kidney injury (AKI) including complicated nephritis and nephrotic syndromes and provision of percutaneous renal biopsy
Clinical care of patients referred to GNCH with severe AKI either as a result of primary kidney disease or treatment for other conditions
Management of chronic kidney disease (CKD)
Responsibility for care of children with CKD stage 2 to 5 as part of a multi-disciplinary team
Treatment of end stage kidney disease by renal replacement therapy
Clinical care of children and young people requiring haemodialysis (on dedicated childrens HD unit) or peritoneal dialysis (at home) as part of a multi-disciplinary team
Transplantation
Clinical care of children and young people requiring kidney transplantation in collaboration with the Institute of Transplantation team, including preparation, peri-operative management and post-transplant care
General nephrology and nephrourology
Management of children and young people with kidney disorders, hypertension, complex urinary tract infection and antenatally diagnosed renal abnormalities

Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills
Essential
- Primary Medical Qualification
- Full GMC Registration
- MRCPCH or equivalent
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register for General Paediatrics with sub-specialty in paediatric nephrology (within 6 months from the date of the AAC)
Desirable
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Completed training in paediatric nephrology
- Substantial experience of paediatric nephrology in a centre specialising in the care of children with acute and chronic renal conditions including renal failure, dialysis and renal transplantation
- Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the Children's Services
- Ability to work within a clinical team and take independent responsibility for the clinical care of paediatric patients referred to a secondary or tertiary centre
Desirable
- Evidence of ability to perform practical procedures such as renal biopsy and ultrasonography
Management and Administration Experience
