Job summary

You will work as part of the MR Physics team, within Radiology Physics, supporting the provision of high quality, efficient and effective MRI services within the Trust and externally. The Directorate of Medical Imaging and Medical Physics presently manage 7 scanners, while the team also supports upwards of 20 external scanners. The Directorate delivers all manner of standard and advanced MR imaging including neuro, cardiac, thoracic, vascular, orthopaedic, kidney, obstetric, whole body, quantitative imaging, functional imaging, radiotherapy planning and other services.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a motivated, scientifically rigorous and patient-centred individual with experience of clinical MRI. You will be responsible for undertaking quality assurance across the range of routine and specialist examinations and will contribute to the safe scanning of complex medical implants.

You will play a key role in the development of MR services by supporting the introduction of novel techniques, in line with latest research, guidelines and the department's clinical priorities. Importance is given to both the optimisation of service delivery and the ability to provide world-leading specialist imaging techniques.

Applications from candidates with less experience will be considered for appointment at a lower grade in the first instance and will be required to work towards achieving HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • (Band 6 & 7) Honours degree in Physical Science at 1st or 2(i) level or equivalent
  • (Band 6 & 7) Postgraduate degree in Medical Physics or relevant subject area
  • (Band 6) Registration with the Health Professions Council as a clinical scientist (or working towards imminent registration for appointment at band 6) with MRI (INIR) physics as area of specialty

Desirable

  • (Band 6 & 7) PhD or equivalent level of knowledge/expertise in Magnetic Resonance Imaging Physics
  • (Band 6 & 7) Associate/Full Member of IPEM or other equivalent professional body

Experience

Essential

  • (Band 6 & 7) Magnetic Resonance, including the direct provision of clinical services, with a good track record of scientific activity and proven ability
  • (Band 6 & 7) Knowledge of the legislation, standards and guidelines relevant to the practice of Magnetic Resonance
  • (Band 6 & 7) Competence in scientific computing and IT
  • (Band 6 & 7) An understanding of clinical governance and its relevance to Magnetic Resonance

Desirable

  • (Band 6 & 7) Experience in implementation of quality standards and development of standard operating procedures and protocols
  • (Band 6 & 7) Experience in staff training and teaching on formal courses
  • (Band 6 & 7) Experience in clinical audit processes
  • (Band 6 & 7) Experience in research resulting in presentation of results via written scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and oral presentation at approved scientific meetings
  • (Band 7) Post registration experience supporting clinical MRI Imaging Department

  • (Band 6 & 7) Good communication skills, including ability to communicate complex information and advice on any of the wide range of topics covered in the Job Description to non-specialists from junior staff up to senior management level and to patients.

  • (Band 6 & 7) Able and willing to travel, alone or with other members of staff, to external sites in the region and occasionally elsewhere in the UK.
