This post is offered on a full time 10 Programmed Activity basis (9 DCC PAs and 1 SPA PAs) although less than full time applications will be considered. There is no on call however, if the skills of the candidate were appropriate there would be the opportunity to participate in the spinal injuries on call rota.

This is a new post in Spinal Injuries / Rehabilitation Medicine within the Mid Yorkshire NHS Teaching trust (MYTT). The key role for this post is to provide clinical leadership to the level II inpatient neurological rehabilitation unit MYTT based at Dewsbury hospital and the Regional Spinal Injuries Unit. This is a 12 inpatient specialist rehabilitation service provided in tandem with a stroke rehabilitation service with some cross cover from stroke consultants, which receives category A and category B specialist rehabilitation patients from neurosurgical departments in Leeds and Sheffield and also the neurology department at Pinderfields Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the post will include;

To provide an effective and efficient inpatient and outpatient service for the care of patients presenting with rehabilitation problems and spinal injuries in this area.

To increase the support to the existing inpatient rehabilitation services within the Dewsbury ward environment.

To develop and expand existing services and to consolidate the current services within Mid Yorks.

To provide Medically led comprehensive specialist rehabilitation services, which have the confidence and expertise to manage people with disabilities within the Mid Yorkshire Area minimising the need to send them out of district.

To promote long-term management of individuals with long-term disabilities through a variety of follow-up mechanisms including outpatient appointments face-to-face, working closely with community teams (including virtual ward rounds), working with specialist nurses, non-face-to-face clinics and GP email advice. This would include planned intervention and life planning, thereby avoiding and reducing crises such as medical complications, emergency hospital admissions and breakdown of care support.

To provide a service that works in close partnership with other agencies, particularly Social Services, to ensure that health and social input have a coordinated approach.

To provide continuity of follow-up care, advice and information for patients and their families.

This post will also include the post-Ward outpatient clinic at Dewsbury hospital which will include a post discharge follow-up clinic and long-term neuro disability clinic for those individuals requiring care closer to home at Dewsbury. There will be a clinic at Pinderfields Hospital combined with the existing post-holder and a registrar in Neurological Rehabilitation for individuals with long-term disabilities. There will also be an opportunity in combination with the current post-holder to work with the Spinal Injuries team to see individuals with long-term neuro disability and to follow up individuals from the ward, in combination with the MDT.

The right candidate would have an opportunity to participate in the spinal injuries unit and to continue to develop their interest in this area.

Person Specification

Management Skills

Essential

  • Demonstrates intelligent and analytical approach to problem solving.
  • Good time management.

Desirable

  • Possess good organisational skills.

Experience

Essential

  • Completed at least four years full time hospital service junior or higher grade since first obtaining full or limited registration, including a minimum 1 year experience in Rehabilitation Medicine.
  • Experience in working in Level II Specialist Rehabilitation Unit

Desirable

  • Competency in botulinum toxin injection and other elements spasticity assessment and management
  • Experience of Working in a Spinal Injuries Unit
  • Experiences of Practising Rehabilitation Medicine in a District General Hospital
  • Computer literate
  • Specific educational interests and evidence of educational ideas or project work.
