Job summary
- To undertake the doctoral child psychotherapy training IPCAPA at the British Psychotherapy Foundation (bpf)/Anna Freud Centre/UCL.
- To undertake clinical work in line with the training requirements of the Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP).
- To complete the training requirements of the Association of Child Psychotherapists.
- Should the postholder cease to be an approved trainee of IPCAPA s/he will no longer be eligible to hold the post.
Main duties of the job
- To provide psychoanalytic psychotherapy under supervision as required within the Child Psychotherapy team.
- To undertake assessment of children, adolescents and their parents for psychotherapy
- To contribute to the multidisciplinary assessment of a broad range of cases based upon psychoanalytic principles and techniques within the generic team
- As a member of the multidisciplinary service of child psychiatrists, psychotherapists, psychologists, family therapists, social workers, nurse specialists, administrative and other staff to attend its meetings and maintain contact with co-workers.
- To participate in the regular review and ongoing discussion of cases in therapy with other members of the multidisciplinary team
- To undertake necessary recording, outcome measures, and other data gathering as required
- At an appropriate stage in the training, to participate in the ongoing consultative and liaison work undertaken by the service.
- To provide supervision for trainees within other disciplines as agreed.
- To contribute to any other aspect of the service with agreement from training school, service supervisor, and line manager.
- To attend supervision regularly with the designated service supervisor.
About us
The Team
Lambeth CAMHS - River Team - is a tier 3 CAMHS team comprising of a range of skilled practitioners who assess and treat a wide variety of mental health disorders being acute, complex, chronic and/or enduring. These include schizophrenia, depression, eating disorders, deliberate self-harm, psychosis, ADHD, OCD, anxiety, gender disorders, conduct disorders, PTSD and substance misuse.
The team is a multidisciplinary team including psychiatry, psychotherapy, psychology, nursing, occupational therapists, art psychotherapists, CBT therapists, social workers and family therapists supported by a business manager and a number of administrators based on site.
We see the majority of the children and young people at our main team base, however, we do have facilities to see people in a local GP surgery and within schools and other statutory services as well as in their homes.
Other teams in the Borough CAMHS work out of a separate building in Brixton, allowing for the base at Black Prince Road to focus on the families presenting to a Tier 3 CAMHS.

- To maintain high standards of clinical record keeping including electronic data entry and recording, report writing and the responsible exercise of professional self-governance in accordance with professional codes of practice of the Association of Child Psychotherapists and Trust policies and procedures.
- To attend team meetings as appropriate, case conferences and professional network meetings and to contribute as part of the child psychotherapy team, a psychodynamic understanding that is articulated and acted on as appropriate.
- To maintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local NHS, Social Care and Education policies and issues of relevance to the service and client group particularly child protection procedures and practices and National Service Frameworks and NICE guidelines.
monitoring and evaluation of risk
In consultation with the service supervisor to be responsible for continually monitoring and evaluating risk to/from children and young people in the trainees own caseload. This may be due to Child Protection concerns, deliberate self harm or other risky behaviour (e.g. running away, substance misuse, causing harm to others).
research and service evaluation
To utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research to support evidence based practice in individual work and with other team members.

Training and Qualifications
Essential
- Undertaking bpf ACP recognised post-graduate Child Psychotherapy training and able to commence full four year clinical training
Desirable
- Experience as a Child and Adolescent Practitioner, working with children in either clinical or community settings.
Experience

- Experience in working with children, adolescents and families in difficulties, (e.g. psychiatry, educational/clinical psychology, medicine, teaching, social worker).
- Experience in working as a full member of an organisation.
- Experience at managing conflict and distressing situations at work.
Knowledge and Skills
Essential
- Good written & verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively with clients, staff, administrators and managers.
- Understanding of contributory factors to emotional and behavioural problems in young people
- Must be able to undertake audit and research
- Sound knowledge of child and adolescent development.
