We are recruiting for Junior Clinical Fellows (ST1-2 equivalent) in Critical Care.

The successful candidates will gain experience in both cardiac and general intensive care working across our three critical care units and surgical high dependency units. A minimum of 2 years post graduate clinical experience is essential (foundation training or equivalent).

This is a unique opportunity to be a part of the UK's premier cardiac centre - Barts Heart Centre (BHC). The Barts Heart Centre was created in 2015 by the merger of services and staff from the London Chest Hospital, UCLH's The Heart Hospital, and those already in existence at St Bartholomew's.

It is the largest specialist cardiovascular centre in the UK, bringing together a wide range of expertise in clinical care, research and education for cardiovascular conditions.

Main duties of the job

Patient Care

o Daily consultant led multi-disciplinary ward rounds (AM and PM)

o Record keeping, patient examination, organisation and collation of investigations.

o Assisting with diagnosis and treatment of patients

o Update all prescriptions as necessary

o When appropriate assess patients on the ward referred to the Intensive Care team

Specific opportunities exist for the post-holder to gain clinical experience in the following:

o Assessment and evaluation of the critically ill patient

o Fluid optimisation, haemodynamic monitoring, manipulation of haemodynamic status including use of inotropes.

o Insertion of arterial, central venous, vascath lines

o Ventilatory support, invasive and non-invasive.

o Echo, both transthoracic and TOE

o Pacing

o Use of continuous veno-venous haemofiltration

o Experience of extracorporeal oxygenation techniques

Job responsibilities

There are 9 senior fellows in cardiothoracic anaesthesia mostly in their advanced training year or undertaking post-CCT fellowships; 14 rotational anaesthetic registrars, 4 clinical fellows (ST grade) and a further 9 clinical fellows covering the GICU.

There are 16 junior doctors (SHO level) across the various ICUs, half of these are rotational internal medical trainees and half are made up by junior fellows.
