Divisional Medical Director - Unplanned Care DivisionAn exciting senior medical leadership opportunity is available in our organisation to oversee and deliver high impact, patient centred, resilient and innovative medical specialty services. You will be working with motivated and committed multi-professional teams and shape and will be able to influence system wide strategy for care for patients with long term conditions.As the Divisional Medical Director, you will be jointly responsible and accountable, with the Divisional Operations Director, Divisional Director of Nursing & Quality, and the Head of Therapies (the Divisional Leadership Team) for the delivery of high quality and high performing services, within budget for an agreed level of activity at an expected level of service, efficiency, and clinical quality.

The divisional leadership team are required to ensure all the activities undertaken within the Division are subject to best practice governance arrangements and meet national and local policies and guidance.

The divisional leadership team will provide leadership and direction for the division, ensuring the fulfilment of the Trust's objectives, patient safety and the roll-out, adoption and use of the Trust's improvement methodology, East and North Herts Production System (based on the Virginia Mason Production System).

Main duties of the job

As part of your role, you will directly manage the Care Group Heads of Clinical Service, who in turn, will manage the Clinical Directors in their Care Group, who manage consultants in their specialties.

The Lead Divisional Director role is an 18-month tenure, rotating between Divisional Leadership team members. The person holding the Lead Divisional Director role will have overall responsibility for the day to day line management of colleagues in the divisional leadership team and is line managed by the Chief Operating Officer.

The divisional leadership team remain jointly responsible for the effective implementation of both national and local strategies along with the achievement of national standards and targets.

The Unplanned Care Division includes 11 specialties with many organised as secondary and tertiary services. The budget is £155m (pay & non pay) and the number of consultants funded in establishment is 132 WTE.

Person Specification

Qualifications / Training

Essential

  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register or, be within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview or, provide GMC confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register
  • Primary Medical Degree.
  • Hold a substantive consultant contract
  • Qualification in medical leadership, or to be in process of achieving this

Previous Experience

Essential

  • Experience of leadership as a clinical director, assistant/deputy clinical director or directorate / care group clinical lead.
  • Demonstrable experience of effective budgetary management and control
  • Experience of supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues
  • Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion
  • Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice

Skills

Essential

  • Able to evidence engagement with clinical governance and the identification of errors and the learning from errors.
  • Evidence engagement with appraisal and revalidation
