Job summary

With the opening of our new Acute Medical Unit (AMU) in April 2024, we are now looking to expand our Acute Medicine Consultant workforce and start looking to develop our Acute Medicine services further.

The successful candidate(s) will join an established team of consultants on AMU. As a growing team, we are looking for like-minded people to join an innovative and dynamic team to help transform our service providing nationally celebrated, collaborative care. This is an exciting opportunity to develop acute medicine and joining at a time when we are developing a new acute medicine service.

In addition, the successful candidate will be invited to discuss opportunities within their areas of interest. We actively encourage special interests and flexible working patterns to support services within acute medicine, education and leadership projects. Areas particularly encouraged are Same Day Emergency Care, Enhanced Level Care, Ultrasound Imaging and echocardiography, Education, Research and Development and Quality Improvement.

We are clinically led and provide joined-up care through our hospital and community services alongside regional specialist cancer care. With our main acute hospital site in Guildford and community hospital sites at Milford, Haslemere, and Cranleigh, we are committed to transforming Acute Medicine across our hospitals and raising our profile nationally.

Main duties of the job

The Acute Physician(s) will be responsible for providing Consultant cover for the medical patients on AMU, patients referred to SDEC, and participate in the GIM on call rota. The key duties and responsibilities of the post will be:

Clinical and administrative responsibility for patients in AMU & SDEC

Consultant level input to deliver early and appropriate clinical decision making for emergency admissions

Supervision of medical admissions through the emergency assessment unit, including flow through from the Emergency Department.

Assessing and assigning patients for ongoing inpatient care, short stay inpatient care in the unit, ambulatory care or discharge

Supervision and training of junior medical staff and allied health professionals working in the units

Supervision and assessment of junior staff performing ward based invasive procedures for patients in the units

Ensuring that resuscitation and end of life care issues are addressed

Review and revision of joint protocols for the management of emergency admissions with clinical colleagues and the nursing team

Development of Ambulatory Emergency Medicine Pathways

Delivery of ambulatory medicine clinics

Delivery of clinical audits relevant to the needs of the Units

Recruitment and active involvement with clinical trials in both units

Participate on the GIM on call rota.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full registration and a license to practice with the GMC
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for via: Acute Medicine, or General Internal Medicine (GIM) or a related medical specialty oCCT (CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview date) oPortfolio Pathway (previously CESR)
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Out of programme management experience

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience of acute general medicine
  • Wide experience of General Internal Medicine including multidisciplinary
  • Significant evidence of experience in clinical leadership
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience
  • Understand the principals of Clinical Governance
  • Evidence of experience of / commitment to audit and improving clinical practice/service development
  • Experience and interest in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • CPD - Evidence of post qualifying and continuing professional development clinical knowledge and skills
  • Must have an understanding of the background to and aims of current healthcare policy/national guidance/CQC/ and appreciate the implications of this on engagement

Research/QI

Essential

  • Active interest in research and commitment to clinical innovation
  • Familiar with quality improvement methodologies and/or research
