Job summary

We are delighted to be able to offer two posts of 6 PAs. This is an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team. These posts are for a general paediatrician with an interest which would compliment our department. We are particularly interested to hear from applicants with an interest in acute and high dependency paediatrics and/or epilepsy but all interests would be considered.

The department of general paediatrics provides a comprehensive acute, general and community paediatric service to the children and young people of Newcastle upon Tyne and its surrounding area. In addition, we provide routine inpatient care for children referred from paediatric units in Gateshead and North Tyneside who require longer periods of inpatient care. We also provide support managing children and young people with complex health needs requiring input from multiple paediatric specialties. Our paediatric emergency department receives in excess of 40,000 children per year.

These posts reflect the need to expand our department to support the increasing complexity and acuity of general paediatrics at the GNCH.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this post is to further develop what is already a thriving and forward looking general paediatric team. The successful candidate will contribute fully to the day to day work of the department including cover of the Paediatric Emergency assessment unit, ward cover along with outpatient responsibilities. This includes approximately one evening shift on the shop floor in the paediatric emergency assessment unit, 1- 2 weekday overnight on calls per month and 6-7 weekends per year.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

  • To provide expert opinions on patients with a wide range of acute and longstanding paediatric problems, taking independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to them.
  • Work closely with nursing, and other staff to create or further develop systems of care dedicated to the management of children with specific disorders, in keeping with the general philosophy of the departments.
  • Provide daytime consultant-based dedicated sessions on the paediatric assessment unit including out of hours.
  • Provide dedicated sessions on the paediatric admissions unit in a flexible manner to ensure prospective cover at times of colleague absence.
  • Undergo Continued Medical Education (CME) in accordance with guidelines stipulated by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH).
  • Undertake an annual appraisal and job plan review. It is expected that objectives within job plan reviews will be based on Trust objectives such as fulfilment of fixed contractual commitments on the basis of a 43 week working year with due allowance for statutory holidays.

Administrative:

  • Undertake administrative duties in relation to the care of his/her patients and in relation to the running of the Childrens Services Directorate in co-operation with the Heads of Department, Directorate Manager and Clinical Director. The appointee is entitled to become a member of the Medical Staff Committee of the hospital.
  • To undertake general administrative duties within a context of compliance with Directorate and Trust aims and objectives.
  • Become involved with the financial management of the paediatric departmental budget - at all times looking to ensure the delivery of high quality care to agreed standards, but at the same time reviewing working practices to provide the most efficient use of resources.

Research:

  • The Trust welcomes and encourages research as a high profile activity that compliments the service provided. The emphasis being on studies that fall within the National Institute of Health Research Portfolio

Teaching:

  • Participate in the teaching of undergraduate medical students from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in all parts of the course but specifically in stage 3 and 5 during the attachments in Child Health. Application will be made for the appointee to be granted the title of Honorary Clinical Lecturer in the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
  • Active involvement in the clinical supervision of all postgraduate trainees in the department with specific responsibility for a small number of individuals as educational supervisor under the direction of the college tutor. The incumbent will be expected to contribute to the teaching of all levels of paediatric postgraduate trainees.
  • Participate in the teaching and training of any other health care professionals within the Directorate an ongoing and active contribution to the education of nurse practitioners on the admissions wards is an essential component of this job.

Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills

Essential

  • Primary Medical Qualification
  • Full GMC Registration
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of experience in acute and general paediatrics
  • Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the speciality
  • Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre
  • Up to date APLS provider

Desirable

  • Special interest suitable for the department
  • Evidence of experience which may support development of HDU
  • Evidence of an interest and training in epilepsy

Management and Administration Experience
