Job summary
University College London Hospitals is seeking to appoint a locum consultant for 6-8 months to the department of Neuroanaesthesia and Neurocritical care at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. The post is required to cover planned maternity leave.
The National Hospital provides tertiary level care in a wide spectrum of neurological and neurosurgical disease with a regional, national and international referral base. The hospital is co-located with the Institute of Neurology in Queen Square, London WC1. Both institutions share the common aim of promoting research and teaching in neuroscience and its allied disciplines.
This post would be suitable for a candidate interested in a future substantive role in Neuroanaesthesia or Neurocritical Care, but also someone with a CCT in Anaesthesia or ICM looking to expand their experience in this subspeciality.
Main duties of the job
The department of Neuroanaesthesia and Neurocritical Care comprises 27 consultants and 39 trainees. This post supports all aspects of anesthesia for neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology, and sessions on the Neurocritical Care Unit.
The appointee will have both fixed sessions and work flexibly to cover consultant leave within the department as required. All candidates must be eligible for full GMC registration and either already be on the Specialist Register or be within six months of receiving CCST/ CCT in Anaesthesia at the time of interview. Essential qualifications for this post include FRCA or equivalent.

Professional Qualifications
Essential
- Full GMC Registration: NB: Non UK trained doctors must be on the GMC register by date of interview.
- On the GMC Specialist Register or eligible for entry within 6 months of attainment of CCT or equivalent in Anaesthesia and ICM at date of interview. NB: Non UK trained doctors must be on the specialist register for anaesthesia and ICM by date of interview.
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent qualification. FRCA
- CCT in ICM as described by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (or evidence of equivalent levels of experience/training).
Desirable
- Diploma in Intensive care Medicine. DICM (UK) OR European Diploma in Intensive Care. EDIC
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Training in Neuroanaesthesia and neuro-critical care recognised by the Royal College of Anaesthetists, or that which is recognised as equivalent by the College.
- Extensive experience in management of neurocritical care patients relevant to the post.
- Advanced training in Neuroanaesthesia (minimum 6 months) in a major neurosurgical unit
Desirable
- Experience as a senior clinical fellow or equivalent in Neuroanaesthesia and neuro-critical care for 1 year or more.
- Experience in more than one neurosurgical centre.
Clinical Skills
Essential
- Post holder is expected to have the clinical skills needed to provide anaesthesia for a wide range of neurosurgical procedures. This includes anaesthesia for complex intracranial, vascular and spinal surgery. Experience in anaesthesia for interventional neuroradiology.
- Experience in managing a wide variety of neurocritical care patients in more than one neurosurgical centre.
Desirable
- Experience with transthoracic echocardiography, use of ultrasound and transcranial Doppler on critical care.
Audit Management and IT
Essential
- The post holders are required to have management skills appropriate to assist in the delivery of a comprehensive service for neuroanaesthesia and neurocritical care in association with other department members.
- Evidence of quality improvement projects resulting in improvement to patient care
Desirable
- Local committee experience
- Evidence of involvement in change management or service redevelopment
Teaching & Research
Essential
- The post holder should have experience of teaching different staff groups in the theory and practice of neuroanaesthesia and neurocritical care.
- Attendance of teaching courses.
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems; ability to critically appraise published evidence
Desirable
- Author of publications in high impact factor peer-reviewed journals.
- Track record in translational research relevant to the speciality.
- Experience of research methods and evidence of research outputs, including presentation and publication of translational research or clinical reviews
