Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, highly motivated and proactive band 8a senior cancer pharmacist with previous cancer services experience to work as part of the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC) clinical pharmacy team. The post holder will lead and develop the clinical pharmacy service to oncology patients treated in the SACT day unit and satellite units.

The successful candidate will have excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills, as well as innovative ideas on improving service delivery and patient care.

Main duties of the job

  • To lead the clinical pharmacy service to TYA and adult oncology patients attending the Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) Day Unit in BHOC and the satellite treatment areas at North Bristol (Concord) and South Bristol Community Hospital.
  • To optimise medicines use by counselling oncology patients and their carers on medication and to work as a non-medical prescriber (NMP) on the day unit to support timely prescribing of supportive care medicines for patients. To provide highly specialist advice and education to the day unit nursing team to meet high standards of patient care and safety.
  • Clinical screening of prescriptions generated in SACT pre-assessment clinics and other outpatient clinics, including clinical trial prescriptions ensuring efficient supply of medication to patients and improving patient's experience.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Pharmacist registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Post-graduate diploma or MSc in clinical pharmacy, clinical oncology or a related field, or equivalent level of knowledge and experience
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
  • Membership of British Oncology Pharmacy Association
  • Prescriber registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council of Great Britain

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Significant hospital and clinical pharmacy experience at Band 7 level
  • Clinical pharmacy experience in an oncology or haematology setting, including experience of clinical verification of systemic anticancer therapy prescriptions
  • Working knowledge of cancer treatments and supportive care
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team and influencing other healthcare professionals
  • Experience of delivering training, supervising and mentoring others
  • Computer literate

Desirable

  • Experience of electronic SACT prescribing
  • Knowledge of current key issues in cancer pharmacy, including developments in cancer treatments

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to use specialist knowledge and judgement to challenge and influence prescribing
  • Good verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate highly complex information relating to medicines in a form appropriate to the task; able to present ideas and information in a clear and concise manner in individual and group settings
  • Able to work under pressure in a busy and demanding environment
  • Effective time management skills, including ability to prioritise, plan and organise own workload and that of a team
  • People management skills, ability to plan, allocate and supervise the work of the team
  • Service improvement skills including the ability to collaborate with others to identify changes required, and to lead on implementing changes in own area of practice
