With our partners, Imperial College London, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and The Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, we form Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre, one of 11 academic health science centres in the UK, working to ensure the rapid translation of research for better patient care and excellence in education.

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic OT to join our Band 5 Occupational Therapy rotation which operates across our 3 main sites: St Mary's hospital - the major trauma centre for the North West London network, Charing Cross hospital which is a specialist stroke and neuroscience centre and Hammersmith hospital where the specialist heart attack centre is situated.

Rotations take place every six months with rotations in; elective orthopaedics, orthopaedic trauma, surgical rehab and cardiology, renal medicine, stroke, neurology & neurosurgery, respiratory medicine, acute medicine, major trauma, Charing Cross Neurological Rehabilitation Unit (CNRU), medicine for the elderly, elderly rehabilitation and oncology. All Band 5s are expected to undertake a mixture of rotations across the 3 sites. Please note now to avoid any disappointment later, it will not be possible to undertake all your rotations within one clinical specialism eg neurosciences, or at one particular site.

The Trust offers a supportive environment to develop your career through professional development and further education. Within each rotation, staff have access to regular supervision, in-service training, journal club and a monthly peer support group.

Main duties of the job

To plan and deliver a patient centred therapy service to patients in hospital and in the community.

To be professionally and legally accountable and responsible for all aspects of your own work, including the management of patients in your care.

To assess and treat patients, individually or in groups when indicated. This will include the application of skills to assess motor, sensory and cognitive function.

To assess, prescribe, arrange provision and installation of specialised equipment and adaptations. Development of assessment, prescription and manual skills related to splinting, specialist seating and wheelchairs.

Through analysis and synthesis of findings, develop individual goal and task orientated treatment plans in collaboration with patients, carers and colleagues.

Ensure patient reviews demonstrate clinical reasoning and problem solving techniques, to determine agreed discharge outcomes across health and social care.

  • Professional degree qualification in relevant profession Occupational Therapy/ Physiotherapy
  • HCPC registration

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in managing physical disability
  • Wide range of experience in training /clinical placements
  • Assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of therapy intervention.
  • Liaison with professional colleagues, carers and relatives in the hospital and community

Desirable

  • Knowledge of clinical governance issues in relation to patient care

Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
  • Able to use in depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology to inform clinical decision making.
  • Ability to manage a clinical caseload and cope with pressures and prioritisation of caseload
  • Make prompt decisions based on knowledge/experience and circumstances.
  • Ability to receive and impart sensitive information related to disability and loss of function
  • Maintain accurate statistics
