Job summary

As a result of enhanced funding, we have an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 physiotherapist to join the NCA neurorehabilitation services.

Initially this will be based on site at Salford, with the option in the future to rotate to other neurorehabilitation areas as the transformation of services across Greater Manchester fulfils its potential.

As a member of the physiotherapy service this role involves working within the well-established multi-disciplinary teams within the Level 1a, hyper acute and acute, neurorehabilitation services (Ward C2 and Ward L1) at the Salford site.

The MDT includes: Rehabilitation Medicine Consultants; rehabilitation nurses; ACP; physiotherapy; occupational therapy; speech and language therapists; dietitian; rehabilitation support workers and assistant practitioners, activity co-ordinator, Neuropsychology, social worker and specialist discharge co-ordinators.

Main duties of the job

The physiotherapy team provide specialist neurorehabilitation to service users who have a wide variety of significant and complex impairments as a result of neurological injury or illness including: traumatic brain injury; acquired brain injury; spinal cord injury; Guillain barre syndrome; multiple sclerosis (MS); infections of the brain, or other inflammatory conditions of the peripheral or central nervous system.

Neurorehabilitation patients on the Salford site present with complex medical needs and have significant physical, cognitive and behavioural presentations, requiring a team approach to achieve the goals set in collaboration with the patient and their families / carers.

Admission onto Wards C2 and L1 form part of the Greater Manchester neurorehabilitation pathway, and the team are responsible for identifying potential and future rehabilitation needs, referring onwards at an appropriate time.

The Band 6 will oversee the provision of tailored programmes including specific physiotherapeutic interventions to a highly specialist level, and will support the Band 7 staff in: the day-to-day planning and operational management of the service, including quality improvement projects and service development; supporting junior and unqualified staff; and offering training opportunities across the team and to students on placement.

Person Specification

Qualifications, Registration and Experience

Essential

  • BSc / MSc Physiotherapy
  • HCPC registration
  • At least 4 years post registration experience including working across core clinical areas
  • A minimum of 12 months experience working with patients of neurological presentation at band 6 level
  • Experience of working with a neurorehabilitation MDT led by a Rehabilitation Medicine Consultant
  • Attendance of the three introductory Bobath Weekend courses

Desirable

  • MSc level courses relevant to neurological rehabilitation, or specific areas of related rehabilitation such as SCI, or research
  • Evidence of working in community neurorehabilitation settings
  • Member of CSP AND relevant Special Interest Group e.g. ACPIN

Knowledege and Skills

Essential

  • Post graduate training relevant to neurorehabilitation, to include Bobath introductory courses
  • Evidence of a wide clinical theoretical base and specialist knowledge in assessment and treatment of patients with complex neurological illness or injury, multiple pathologies, and progressive conditions
  • Evidence of experience managing patients requiring respiratory support and tracheostomy patients to a high level of skill
  • Highly developed communication and leadership skills with evidence of post-graduate training
  • Evidence of leading service improvement / development initiatives
  • Evidence of supervising other staff and students and completion of clinical educators course

Desirable

  • To have completed relevant and up to date training and ot have experience of the use of MCA
  • Completion of Basic Bobath course
  • To have experience of complex decision making processes including where capacity decisions may be required.
