Ensuring that busy, time-poor NHS staff -- both clinical and non-clinical - have access to key information in an easy-to-digest way which encourages engagement is crucial. It can help to boost morale, which in turn supports the delivery of compassionate, outstanding care.

Our senior internal communications and engagement manager will be accountable for our internal communications channels. They will work closely with the head of communications and other colleagues to devise, implement and evaluate the Trust's internal comms strategy which supports the overall aims and priorities of the department and wider organisation.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring our internal audiences are informed and engaged through the daily delivery of high-quality communications, through both business-as-usual projects but also periods of major service or transformational change such as the selection and launch of our new electronic patient record (EPR).

This position also requires being part of a 24/7 on-call rota and will be expected to deputise for the head of communications when required.

Main duties of the job

-Lead the development and implementation of the Trust's internal communications and engagement strategy.

-Evaluate and report progress against strategies and plans with transparent and detailed analysis, using data and insights, to ensure highly-effective communications.

-Communicate complex and sensitive service or transformational changes effectively across appropriate internal communications channels, verbally and in writing.

-Advise and update programme boards, delivery boards, working groups, executive directors, the Board, and senior leaders on major communications projects, proactively managing senior stakeholders and resolving conflict when it arises.

-Target hard-to-reach staff groups and understand their needs to develop effective and innovative internal communications and engagement ideas to support them.

-Utilise existing staff networks and engagement groups to ensure representation in trust communications, engagement and decision making.

-Evaluate the effectiveness of internal communications and engagement to ensure improvements are implemented.

-Line management of staff, displaying leadership skills which reflect our compassionate and inclusive culture, values and behaviours.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree-level education or equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and / or training in the communications field to masters level equivalent.

Desirable

  • Relevant postgraduate qualification in communications, marketing or journalism.

Experience

Essential

  • Substantial experience of managing internal communications in a large, public-facing organisation.
  • Experience of designing, delivering, implementing and evaluating effective internal communications strategies and plans.
  • Experience of operating and thinking strategically, planning communications for maximum impact on organisational objectives.
  • Demonstrable experience of planning, leading and managing complex communications campaigns - involving management of timescales/deadlines, budgets and co-ordination.
  • Experience of line management, providing peer support and motivating colleagues.
  • Experience of managing external agencies, including web, print and design agencies
  • Understanding/awareness of the NHS and wider health agenda, including knowledge of Trust stakeholders and local political environment.
  • Proven written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to think strategically and plan communications for maximum impact on organisational objectives.
  • Ability to receive, analyse, translate and present complex, sensitive information into plain language and deliver messages appropriately to key audiences where cooperation and/or engagement are required.
  • Work well under pressure, with an ability to effectively and calmly manage a number of different and competing priorities to tight deadlines, responding to interruptions and unpredictable, urgent requests.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate with and secure the confidence of senior staff and build effective relationships with a wide range of colleagues.

  • Experience of reporting to Board and executive teams.
  • Experience of managing proactive and reactive media relations, including managing the media in crisis situations.
  • Managing and protecting house/organisation style and corporate identity/image
  • Experience of handling and delivering confidential, high-profile and sensitive issues.
  • Occasional need for lifting and moving goods and materials and equipment to events.
