You will be helping the Practice Development team to develop high standards of practice & performance as well as to develop a comprehensive education programme for our Neighbourhood Nursing team in the heart of London.

We are looking for a staff member to provide support to our Integrated Local Services Practice Development team with a focus on supporting clinical skills competency.

You will be involved with supporting clinical staff and teaching. You will also be involved with education & training to all relevant personnel within the Integrated Local Services (ILS) directorate to ensure high standards of care and excellent patient experience.

Main duties of the job

You will support the Education Lead and Service Leads to provide direction & leadership and to implement the education, training and development strategy for district nursing, community matrons, as well as in-patient rehabilitation units, @home service plus other community services staff.

We are embarking on some exciting new educational initiatives to support newly qualified and new people to community nursing and you will take responsibility for the further development, growth and support of new recruits and existing staff including acute nursing staff on rotation from Guys and St Thomas' to meet the exciting new ways of working here in South London Community nursing services.

You will be working across all nursing services across ILS with a team of practice development nurses.

Job responsibilities

Education/Staff Development

- To identify training and development needs of staff within the area in accordance with local and national policies.

- Support staff in the provision of regular local and relevant teaching and training sessions including provision of professional supervision to facilitate learning.

- To be a source of highly specialist clinical and educational knowledge.

- The post holder will also be required to deliver training as required.

- Support delivery of orientation programme for new staff members and an ongoing programme of training for qualified and unqualified staff and overseas nurses requiring adaptation in the care and management of patients within the speciality.

- Works with Practice Development team to contribute to standard setting for nursing practice.

- Participates in the training of staff to monitor the quality of care delivered using clinical standards and takes necessary action to ensure excellence in nursing practice. Bases standards upon relevant research where possible.

- Develop and implement training programmes for nurses to expand their clinical skills in accordance with the Trusts standards.

Professional Responsibilities

- To be accountable for care given and comply with the NMC Code and other appropriate NMC guidance, working within the framework of the scope of professional practice.

- Practices to meet the objectives of the Trust Nursing and Midwifery Strategy.

- Is wholly accountable for his/her own clinical/nursing practice and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve his/her knowledge and professional competence. Takes responsibility for own professional development and clinical update in conjunction with performance appraisal initiative at agreed intervals.

- Able to analyse, interpret and problem solve to enable the practitioner to deal with complex situations, both clinical and non-clinical.

- Have a visible presence within the clinical setting.

- Organises own time and that of learners/junior staff.

Research and Development

- Actively disseminate research findings as a positive role model through lectures, teaching and other appropriate communication methods.

- Assist in the bench marking of nursing practice and evaluate the impact on new practices implemented.

Management duties

- Communicates with staff in all areas of the Trust.

- Act all times to ensure that staff practise Trust and Unit policies and procedures.

- Responsible for monitoring performance against competency requirements.

- Facilitate the sharing of best practice both within the Trust and externally.

Person Specification

Education/ Qualifications

Essential

  • Education/ QualificationsNMC Level one Registered Nurse Adult.
  • Specialist professional knowledge of mentorship, education and development practice.
  • Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic Development.

Desirable

  • Specialist Practice Teacher.
  • ENB 998 or equivalent teaching qualification.
  • Post registration qualification relevant to Service e.g. Specialist practitioner District Nursing.

Previous experience

Essential

  • Post registration experience within community setting.
  • Delivery of training sessions / programmes.
  • Experience of supervising/ assessing nurses and students in practice.
  • Experience of involvement in educational initiatives
  • Experience of working with Internationally Educated Nurses.

Skills/Knowledge / Ability

Essential

  • Knowledge of educational standards and practice.
  • Understanding of the principles of teaching and learning.
  • Evidence of excellent clinical skills.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal & communication skills.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of local, regional and national policies pertaining to practice experience and education.
  • Knowledge of a variety of teaching methods.
  • Able to present articulately to large groups of people.
