Job summary

The Acute Stroke/ Neurology Unit is a 27 bedded facility which includes a 6 bedded Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. The unit is responsible for the assessment of patients that present with stroke and neurology symptoms. We are looking to appoint an experienced Registered Nurse/Allied Health Professional to lead the team in developing the service and managing the unit.

The advert itself will cover a full time post at 37.5 hours per week with an overall responsibility over ward assurance.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a confident nurse with recent experience in an acute hospital, preferably stroke/ neurology setting alongside SLIP or equivalent qualification. NVQ/Diploma assessor qualification is desirable.

The successful candidate will need to be dynamic, hardworking, exhibit excellent standards in communication and will be expected to lead and deliver high quality evidence based care. They will need to possess the ability to remain calm and professional under pressure.

The post holder will be supported in their professional development and will have the opportunity to develop in leadership and management while supporting and developing others.

They will be part of the management team and support with training and clinical supervisory responsibilities and be involved in the recruitment process, absence management, incident investigation and contribute to the development of the ward. The role will need to cover 4 days a week whilst ensuring a safe roster is in place.

Good leadership and communication skills are essential. Individuals should be flexible and be able to demonstrate they are an excellent role model with the ability to develop excellent interpersonal relationships.

Experience

Essential

  • Acute medical nursing experience at Band 6 (significant)
  • Regularly in charge of a ward
  • Delivered improvement in patient care
  • Worked within a multidisciplinary team

Skills

Essential

  • Ability to prioritise and problem solve
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • BLS trained
  • Ability to make decisions and escalate appropriately
  • Ability to challenge practice and support staff
  • Knowledge and skills in Elderly and Intermediate Care

Desirable

  • Additional clinical skills e.g. cannulation, phlebotomy, intravenous drugs

Knowledge

Essential

  • Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
  • Understands how acute medicine patient flow works

Qualifications

Essential

  • RGN - adult nursing
  • Teaching and Assessing in practice qualification (FLIP/ENB 6590 /998)

Desirable

  • Diploma/Degree in Nursing or equivalent experience/ working towards
