Be our clinical deputy lead in an advanced Imaging department at Milton Keynes University Hospital. This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced MRI Radiographer looking to advance their career in operational management and contribute to the cutting-edge field of medical imaging.

As the Band 7 Deputy MRI Lead, you will work closely with the MRI Lead Radiographer, contributing to the operational success of Milton Keynes University Hospital and Community Diagnostic Centre. Collaboration with the entire imaging department team and other stakeholders is integral to the role.

Milton Keynes University Hospital currently boasts two 1.5T MRI scanners, Siemens Avanto Fit, and state-of-the-art Siemens Sola. The ongoing establishment of a new Community Diagnostic Centre, featuring a third scanner with cutting-edge technology, reflects our commitment to expanding services. This growth allows us to enhance MRI capacity, delivering responsive and timely diagnostic imaging at the highest level for our patients.

Main duties of the job

  • Perform wide range of MRI procedures according to Trust, Departmental and statutory regulations.
  • Provide a high standard of patient care within the specialised area of MRI ensuring a sensitive and courteous approach to all patients.
  • To communicate effectively to ensure the smooth running of the MRI service.
  • To supervise, mentor and coach new team members, junior staff and students working within the MRI department.
  • To deputise and line manage staff in the absence of the MRI Modality Lead.
  • To ensure a high-quality, safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led MRI service is maintained with patient waiting times kept to a minimum.
  • To acquire knowledge of developments in MR imaging techniques and to improve and maintain professional expertise via continuous professional development
  • To ensure correct maintenance and operation of equipment utilised within the working environment
  • To co-operate with efficient MR service delivery across the trust (i.e., including acute hospital site, mobile facilities, and community diagnostic centres)
  • Fulfil your contractual working hours commitment by participating in a range of 24/7 rostered shift patterns

Job description

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

  • To independently undertake a wide range of MRI procedures, ensuring high professional standards of technical competence and patient care are maintained at all times
  • Able to work in an advanced practitioner capacity, with a high degree of autonomy to provide clinical support and advice to other radiographic practitioners

Leadership and Management

  • To encourage the highest professional and technical standards in all staff using personal example and constructive supervision
  • To be responsible for leading and co-ordinating the team in an allocated area in the absence of the Superintendent Radiographer. This will involve being able to cope with frequent interruptions from both colleagues and other medical and non-medical staff of the Trust

Communication

  • To offer advice and guidance to patients, carers and other health professionals on radiology procedures, specialised procedures and ionising and non-ionising radiation issues taking due consideration of the patients condition
  • Assess specific communication needs of individual patients. To anticipate where communication difficulties might make completion of relevant documents e.g., MRI safety questionnaire or IV allergy form, impossible and implement alternative methods to ensure patient safety is maintained at all times.

Teaching, Training and Research

  • To participate in the induction and training of new staff, assistant practitioners, and student radiographers
  • To supervise, assist and support radiographers and medical staff training in specialist areas.

Professional role responsibilities

  • Practices in accordance with the professional, ethical, and legal codes of the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), the Society of Radiographers Professional Code of Conduct and Trust and NHS protocols and guidelines
  • Maintain a commitment to professional development and a high level of technical and theoretical skills ensuring a CPD portfolio of evidence is kept up to date. To take every opportunity for self-development in extended radiographic roles

Person Specification

Qualifications and knowledge

Essential

  • BSc (Hons) Radiography, DCR(D) Diploma of the College of Radiographers or equivalent
  • Post graduate qualification in imaging (i.e., MRI)
  • Quality Improvement, transformation, and innovation training
  • Health and Care Professions Council Registration
  • Evidence of a sound level of computer literacy (MS Teams, word, outlook, power point and excel)
  • Familiarity with hospital information systems (HIS), radiology information systems (RIS) and picture archiving communications systems (PACS
  • Good understanding of health and safety requirements
  • Sound awareness of data protection, freedom of information and confidentiality issues within NHS
  • Evidence of keeping informed of the current MR imaging techniques & practices
  • Knowledge of relevant national imaging standards (e.g., IR(ME)R 2017, IRR '17 and associated codes of practice)
