Job description

Job responsibilities

The Maternity Unit caters for high- and low-risk cases and a philosophy of midwife-led care co-exists with high-risk interventional obstetrics. The delivery rate is currently > 6000 per year.

The epidural rate is ~50%. Regional anaesthesia is used in ~90% of caesarean sections. Our caesarean section rate is ~30%.

We provide a joint cardiac service working with the adult congenital heart disease team at the Royal Brompton Hospital, and Professor M Johnson and his team of maternal medicine specialists, to deliver approximately 100 women per year with complex heart disease.

We are a service provider for patients with abnormally invasive placenta and accept regional case referrals of these parturients.

The Chelsea & Westminster Hospital is the centre for in-utero transfers of neonates who require surgery within West London and we provide Level 3 neonatal care for premature and sick babies. The Trust is the lead centre for paediatric surgery in West London.

There are two dedicated obstetric theatres, and a 5-bedded nurse-led recovery and HDU area. We run elective caesarean section lists daily, alongside emergency cases. We are actively exploring a dedicated elective theatre pathway away from the main Labour Ward in line with EMBRACE recommendations.

The private maternity unit has a separate resident consultant on-call rota providing cover out of hours.
