Job summary

A vacancy has arisen in the Quality and Audit team at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust. This will be a 12 month fixed-term/secondment role with a view to permanency.

The main purpose of this newly developed role is to support the Head of Quality and Clinical Effectiveness to drive key quality, clinical effectiveness and safety initiatives within the Trust, with a focus on the nursing care agenda.

We are looking for a registered nurse who can support their clinical colleagues to make changes that positively impact patient care and outcomes.

Management of data is a key element of the role, and we are looking for an individual who has strong attention to detail and is able to support data quality.

This is a cross-site role and will involve being based at either Frimley Park Hospital or Wexham Park Hospital, with travel between the two sites required occasionally.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an individual to work under the direction of the Head of Quality and Clinical Effectiveness to facilitate the Trust's Fundamental and Better Care (FAB) programme.

The postholder will organise and execute quality walkabouts with a focus on nursing quality and safety topics, co-ordinating feedback and following up where required. They will have a frequent presence within clinical areas to increase awareness of the FAB programme and work collaboratively with the Trust's FAB fellows to ensure consistent standards of care are delivered across the organisation.

They will support nursing teams to review their department's FAB audit results and:

  • identify areas of improvement in relation to nursing care and celebrate excellent practice.
  • identify which areas may need additional support to continuously improve.
  • provide assurance in relation to the standard of nursing care across Frimley Health.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Facilitate the Fundamental and Better Care Programme, including:
    • analysing audit results and preparing summaries of the finding in reports to influence clinical practice and communicate main messages to key stakeholders.
    • identifying areas of good practice and helping clinical teams to embed best practice across the Trust.
    • early escalation of concerning performance and supporting clinical areas to address those concerns with improvement plans.
    • Working collaboratively with ward staff and leaders to ensure commitment to the FAB programme.
  • Co-ordinate the Quality Walkabout programme, including:
    • facilitating the timetable.
    • capturing and monitoring agreed actions.
  • Supporting the Head of Quality and Clinical Effectiveness to drive forward areas identified as requiring improvement.
  • Actively work to increase the scope and quality of audits within nursing to provide assurance and evidence of changes in practice following patient safety, experience or quality concerns.
  • Undertake and facilitate Trust-wide internal nursing clinical audits.
  • Ensure data collection is accurate, timely and analysis can be used to inform continuous quality improvement. Use clinical knowledge to help with data validation.
  • Identify and escalate key clinical quality and safety issues, either verbally or in a written report.
  • Contribute to education requirements relating to the areas of quality, audit and clinical effectiveness, e.g. education roadshows, awareness events, teaching sessions, dissemination of new policies, protocols and guidelines.
  • To work effectively within the corporate nursing team and in partnership with the patient safety, patient experience and safeguarding teams.
  • Liaise with all disciplines and levels of clinical staff and patients as required (external and Trust) in relation to all matters quality including contentious and sometimes difficult matters.
  • Provide clinical support as required by the Trust in times of extreme demand.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Current NMC/ HCPC Registration
  • Educated to at least Foundation degree level in line with above registration requirements

Desirable

  • Able to use software to design method of data collection, collate, manipulate, present data
  • Continuous quality improvement training e.g., yellow belt qualification.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working clinically at band 5 level or above
  • Experience/involvement in performance/change management.
  • Experience of using Patient Information IT systems e.g., Epic.
  • Confidence in dealing with staff at all levels including clinicians.
  • IT knowledge/use: Word, Excel including pivot tables, charts and graphs, PowerPoint.

Desirable

  • Experience of using clinical audit cycle to provide assurance/identify gaps in standards and to support improvement work to enhance patient outcomes and standard setting.

Skills and knowledge

Essential

  • Have excellent verbal and written communication, negotiation and facilitation skills to all levels and with all disciplines within the Trust and externally.
  • Influencing skills to support managing change and be able to handle challenging conversations.
  • Presentation skills - preparation and delivery.
  • Ability to produce and present reports and correspondence of a high standard
  • Excellent time management and ability to work to tight deadlines and change within the working environment
  • Capacity for prolonged intense concentration
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to manage difficult/stressful situations effectively.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to motivate others.

  • Core knowledge of national guidelines and key indicators.
  • Participation in national or Trust wide audits.
  • Accurate and quick keyboard skills.
