This is a replacement Consultant post. The postholder will have significant involvement in the delivery of paediatric/neonatal anaesthesia and adult anaesthsia both during daytime cover and as part of the paediatric consultant on-call rota. The department covers most anaesthesia specialities, and a dynamic individual with supplementary interests would be welcomed.

Main duties of the job

It is envisaged that the appointee will contribute to the development and delivery of aspects of these services depending upon their interests and experience.

The remit of the post holder will be to work flexibly within the multi-disciplinary team providing and further developing care for patients requiring anaesthesia. In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the Anaesthetic Department while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.

The post will be based mainly at Denmark Hill site and the proposed 10 PA Job Plan is attached. There will be an average of 8.5 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with the 1 PA being allocated for Supporting Professional Activity (CPD) and 0.5 SPA for new consultant development. In discussion with your department, further SPA may be allocated from team job planning for educational activities. Research time would normally be supported through external funding and or successful application for "green shoots funding".

The On-Call commitment is for a 1:10-1:12 frequency rota non-resident paediatric consultant on- call, classed as Category A which attracts a 3% uplift

Job responsibilities

  1. Together with the other Consultants to provide a service for Anaesthesia This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department
  2. . Shared responsibility with the other Consultants for providing 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.

3. Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.

4. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.

5. Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Divisional management team.

6. Contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework.

7. Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.

8. Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the departments/ Divisions Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.

9. Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for anaesthesia services.

10. Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post- qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.

11. Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.

12. Undertake Divisional management duties as agreed with the Divisional/departmental Manager/Clinical Director.

13. Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.14. Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.

15. Be accountable for implementation of the Code of Practice within own department/area of responsibility.

Person Specification

Qualifications, Registration

Essential

  • Registerable medical qualification
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • Full Registration with GMC and completed subspecialty training programme in anaesthesia
  • Full Registration with GMC and completed subspecialty training programme in anaesthesia

Training and Experience

Essential

  • Wide experience in delivery of anaesthesia for paediatric and neonatal surgery
  • Award of CCT or equivalent

Desirable

  • Experience of delivering Anaesthesia at Consultant level and supervising junior colleagues within that capacity
  • 1 year fellowship experience in paediatric anaesthesia in a tertiary paediatric centre

Management and Leadership

Essential

  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams

Desirable

  • Management course and/or qualification

Audit

Essential

  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit.
  • Must have undertaken and completed audit projects and QIPs

Research and Publications

Essential

  • Experience of clinical research

Desirable

  • Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of anaesthesia
  • Publication of relevant review articles or case reports
