Key tasks and Responsibilities for the post:

Assume autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment, evaluation and discharge of clients.

To provide consultation within Plymouth CAMHS, Plymouth Childrens social care and other external agencies.

Make a clinical formulation based on a specialist assessment of needs including the assessment of risk.

Design and implement Care Plans around clients mental health/psychological needs taking care to monitor effectiveness and outcome.

Undertake risk assessments of clients devising, communicating and implementing risk management strategies. Where appropriate, providing advice to others about risk management of young people referred to the team.

To deliver treatment approaches which are informed by reference to good practice guidelines and NICE guidance and which fall within ones area of expertise and competence.

Deliver individual, group or family work and provide advice and consultation according to the needs of children, their carers and the wider system.

Participate and lead in joint complex assessments and intervention with colleagues from other disciplines and agencies, as well as other colleagues within the wider CAMHS department.

To work as an independent practitioner and have regular clinical professional supervision on their caseload in accordance with good practice guidelines.

Work as a Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist/Clinical Psychologist or equivalent therapeutic modality within your professional guidelines & overall framework of Service policies & procedures, in conjunction with a clinical supervisor(s) and line manager.

Assess safeguarding issues for own caseload and communicate concerns, referring and/or joint working as appropriate. Access safeguarding supervision as and when needed.

Offer safeguarding supervision to other clinicians within the Looked after Child pathway and the wider CAMHS service as and when needed. (Training will be provided)

Communicate complex and emotionally difficult information in a clear, skilled and sensitive manner.

Demonstrate expertise, sensitivity and professionalism in attendance at multi-disciplinary meetings or when offering consultation where there may be a conflict of opinion or priority.

Work in community settings as dictated by the clients need.

To work alongside other agencies on the promotion of resilience and management of risk particularly at times of transition for this client group.

To lead on specific projects as agreed by the team.

Work with other agencies with the aim of promoting children and young peoples psychological well-being, education and social circumstances.

Maintain good relationships and clear lines of communication (written and verbal) with other professional agencies and department.

Be responsible for adhering to the administrative procedures within Livewell Southwest CAMHS, including keeping clear & up to date case notes.

Utilise research skills for audit, policy & service development.

Assist with teaching & training activities.

Clinical responsibility:

Be responsible for high quality evidence-based assessment and treatment to service users referred into the Psychotherapy and other modalities within CAMHS.

To participate in a team approach to working with highly complex emotional and behavioural difficulties. Manage emotional situations with sensitivity, skill and have an understanding of unconscious processes.

Work flexibly and cooperatively, with colleagues within all the CAMHS Pathways.

Apply specialist knowledge and experience of mental health assessment and treatment, to formulate a treatment plan, consulting with relevant colleagues as appropriate.

Communicate with service users about outcome of assessment, treatment recommendations and informed discussion of options.

Assess and manage clinical risk within appropriately defined frameworks. Recognise need for additional mental health team input where appropriate. Undertake risk assessment and management with service users in line with principles of child psychoanalytic psychotherapy/clinical psychology/therapeutic modality and in conjunction with a clinical supervisor.

Engage and communicate with service users and carers sensitively and clearly over sustained periods of time. Understand, contain and manage severe difficulties with communication, including unconscious factors, and high levels of emotional disturbance and arousal.

Engage and communicate with service users across a wide range of social, language and cultural barriers. Engage and communicate with interpreters and advocates for service users about the specific needs of users of specialist CAMHS services.

Receive and utilise regular clinical supervision of work in accordance with good practice guidelines.

Maintain relevant and up-to-date clinical records. Ensure that the outcome of assessment and treatment is communicated appropriately to referring and other agencies. Execute such responsibility with sensitivity to, and understanding of, issues concerning confidentiality and risk assessment/management.

Be responsible for developing and maintaining knowledge of local resources and developing effective working relationships with relevant statutory and non-statutory services and organisations.

Development and Planning:

To encourage consultation by users, Livewell Southwest staff, GP, Social Services, Education and others working within local services.

Teaching, Training and Supervision:

To receive regular individual professional supervision and participate in regular peer supervision within the CAMHS team in accordance with LWSW supervision policy.

To be responsible for providing clinical supervision to colleagues from a range of backgrounds. To be job planned

To act as a specialist child psychoanalytical psychotherapist/psychologist/therapeutic modality resource through provision of consultation and training within Plymouth CAMHS and to other health and social care agencies.

To be support/undertake in-service training days and training of staff from other agencies.

To attend regular line management supervision.

To maintain professional registration with the ACP/HCPC/NMC/BABCP or equivalent.

Research, Evaluation and Audit:

As an experienced clinician, to use professional skills in the evaluation, monitoring and development of the teams operational policies, through the deployment of professional skills in research, service evaluation and audit. This will include the completion of statistical information to ensure quality and quantity of services available or highlight areas of deficit.

To regularly promote, conduct and collaborate in such clinically relevant research projects as agreed and appropriate.

To seek ways of involving children and families in the design of user-friendly research methods and create opportunities for feedback from service users and use this to enhance and develop service delivery.

To propose and implement changes in the development of policies, procedures and plans in order to enhance and develop pathways as part of a comprehensive Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the evidence base in relation to Child & Adolescent mental health and to use such knowledge to develop the Child & Adolescent Looked after Child Pathway, inform the post-holders own clinical practice and consultation to colleagues in other disciplines.

To attend and actively participate in team meetings to share, promote and integrate psychoanalytic thinking and practice in the work of the multidisciplinary team.

Information Governance Responsibilities:

To contribute to and participate in Information Governance.

To maintain high standards of clinical record keeping and to adhere to organisation policies and procedures.

To provide comprehensive reports as required.

To attend all mandatory training as required by Livewell Southwest

To maintain adequate clinical notes as well as reports for internal use and external agencies, as well as maintaining good communication with referrers and other professionals involved.

To have the ability and knowledge to use the organisations systems and ensure all clinical notes are documented on this system.

To assess own professional training needs (CPD) on an annual basis, and to take part in the Livewell Personal Development Review System.

To contribute to the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes.

To maintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies and issues in relation to both the specific client group and mental health in general, including knowledge of Safeguarding Procedures and incident reporting.

To maintain ACP/NMC Registration or equivalent

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Masters degree level or working towards (or equivalent experience, training and skills)
• Professional qualification relevant to CAMHS e.g. mental health nursing, social work, psychology, Psychotherapy, Occupational Therapist, Art Therapist. Registration with appropriate professional body for their qualification i.e HCPC, BABCP, NMC or equivalent.
• Post-graduate training in treatment approaches relevant to CAMHS

Desirable

• Post-graduate training in a specific treatment modality.

Experience

Essential

• Experience of at least 3-years working in CAMHS which includes all of the following -
• Clinical mental health assessment and formulation.
• Assessment and management of risk.
• A range of therapeutic interventions relating to mental health and behaviour.
• Culturally competent practice with people from a range of diverse backgrounds.
• Consultation to professionals and non-professionals.
• Working with individuals who have experienced trauma and abuse.

• Extensive experience of delivering specialist Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy or equivalent dependent on professional registration & therapeutic experience; (assessment, formulation and treatment) maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
• A high level of competence in applying a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy or Psychology to complex difficulties and a proven track record of delivering positive outcomes in this therapy
• Substantial experience in childrens mental health gained during and/or after child psychotherapy/clinical psychology/therapeutic modality post training.
• A clear and theoretically informed approach to supervision
• Significant experience of working with the particular client group served by the service
• Knowledge of guidance and legislation in relation to the client group.
• High level specialist knowledge of the theory and practice of specialist psychoanalytic psychotherapy, as applied to the client group using this service.
• Evidence of continuing professional development as required by the Association of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy or equivalent professional registration with HCPC.
