The Role

This is a unique post which will provide rich opportunities to develop interests and expertise in medical education whilst broadening your clinical experience specifically in Obs & Gynae. In addition to your clinical role you will work for the Department of Undergraduate Education and help to deliver and develop high quality undergraduate teaching to all medical students and Physician Associate students whilst supporting junior trainees training in the Trust.

  • We have a vacancy for two Junior Clinical/Education Fellow to commence August 2024 for 12 months.
  • The posts will 50% educational and 50% clinical service provision (clinical attachment in Obs & Gynae) and you will work 2 six month rotations between clinical and education duties.

Main duties of the job

The role will be focused on delivering high quality education to our learners who rotate through the department and as such you will have protected education time whilst holding some clinical responsibility to deliver clinical care. The clinical responsibilities will be expected to be equivalent to those of a trainee at the same stage of training and based on evidenced-based competencies. Supervision will be the responsibility of the Obs & Gynae Clinical Lead and also guided by an allocated Educational Supervisor and by supervising consultants.

When working educationally, you may be asked to undertake supportive clinical activity to support the team but, in a supernumerary, protected way to enable you to really focus on delivering high quality education

The post holder will be expected to carry out a range of duties encompassing many aspects of Obs & Gynae & Maternity services. These duties may include bedside and ward-based teaching, teaching whilst seeing patients, in outpatient clinics and community settings or helping support student learning in areas such as A+E or on our day case Investigation and Surgery units for example. There is opportunity to help deliver teaching along with clinical tutors in timetabled UCLan Campus Day sessions for years 3 and 4 students.

This post represents a unique opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge in non-medical areas whilst maintaining clinical contact. It will be enjoyable, fulfilling and relevant to the future practise of any doctor. It will also allow sufficient time to explore this area in detail and develop original ideas. It will enhance professional and personal development within Medical Education.

Obs & Gynae training at ELHT is in a well-supported environment. Although this post is not a recognised UK training post, the post-holder will have a named, enthusiastic supervisor, and be supported in undertaking a wide range of CV-enhancing activities.

During your time you will undertake activities including;

  • Contributing to clinical placements of all learners in Obs & Gynae providing;
  • Teaching clinics and ward rounds
  • Skills sessions including resuscitation updates and scenarios
  • Ward based supervision/teaching sessions
  • Bedside teaching sessions
  • Lecture and tutorial session (where required)
  • Case presentations
  • CBL and/or PBL sessions
  • Simulation sessions (where required)

It is anticipated that majority of the post holders role will be focused on undergraduate medical students and physician associates in locality. However, it is strongly expected that you will make some contribute to the education of other learners within the Trust.

Management

  • Work with the education teams at ELHT and, where appropriate, from all our education partners
  • Collaborate and work closely with East Lancashire Primary Care educators where opportunities permit.
  • Participate in appropriate curriculum committees.

Learning & Development

  • Network with clinical staff to share best practice.
  • Work collaboratively with all Educators across the organisation to promote standardised training and education.
  • Assist with the update of lesson plans and teaching resources to constantly seek to improve the quality of education through the use of evidence-based practice, liaising with professional colleagues, reviewing literature and evaluating feedback.
  • Evaluation and monitoring will be a core role and opportunities for audit and original research in this area will be actively encouraged and one area we are keen to assess is the impact of education on patient care.
  • Deliver programmes of learning.
  • Provide constructive feedback to learners on their performance.
  • Produce regular reports and audit data on progress to the Clinical Module Lead which are clear, fluent, concise and easily understood.
  • Actively promote equal opportunities for access to learning & development to all staff from all backgrounds.
  • Act as a member of the education team with attendance at relevant meetings, as directed.
  • As a student supervisor, your role will be to oversee your student(s) progress during the module and provide feedback both verbal and written.

Professional Development, Supervision & Support

  • You will be provided with an enthusiastic named educational supervisor and supported in

Gaining appropriate competencies in line with your level of training according to the RCOG Curriculum.

  • You will participate in the agreed personal development and appraisal plan
  • The candidate will complete a postgraduate certificate in medical education (if they do not already hold this qualification).
  • The successful applicants personal development will be mentored and supported through the year and a personal development plan will be developed in conjunction with the Director for Undergraduate Education and the Clinical Module Leads for Obs & Gynae. A portfolio of achievements will be collected through the year to evidence this plan.

Research, Curriculum Development & QIPP

  • Work with partner universities/medical schools to undertake a project relating to medical education
  • This may include auditing of mapping of educational delivery of learning outcomes in line with curriculum and participation in Trust and other Academic meetings to keep up to date and learn from or present Audit and Research

Pastoral

  • Develop and deliver an effective pastoral system appropriate to the needs of each student group in your speciality

Person Specification

Knowledge Requirements

Essential

  • Knowledge of medical training and evidence of competence in relevant procedures
  • Knowledge of education and training issues from competition of UK based Medical degree or a minimum of 12 months previous NHS experience
  • Good communication skills with ability to motivate colleagues - medical and non-medical
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Previous experience working in Obs and Gynae

Desirable

  • Awareness of national agenda in relation to medical education and training
  • Involvement in management and administration
  • Evidence of ability to lead and motivate a team

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full Registration with GMC and Licence to Practise
  • Successful completion of Foundation Training

Desirable

  • Evidence of publications in medical education journals
  • Evidence of publications in peer reviewed medical journals
  • MRCOG part 1 Evidence of recent PROMPT training

Further Training

Desirable

  • Teaching, Learning and Assessment training
  • ATLS, ALS or APLS
  • PG cert in medical education or equivalent

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working or delivering medical education
  • Proven ability to utilise Information Technology as administrative tool
