Job summary

To participate in the medical on call registrar rota at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and occasionally in CSRU (Cardiology and Stroke Receiving Unit) at Wycombe Hospital.

To care for general medical patients with an emphasis on the acute medicine department.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to participate in an on call rota at Stoke Mandeville and/or Wycombe hospital. Stoke Mandeville is an unselected take and Wycombe is a selected take of cardiac and stroke patients (Cardiac and Stroke Receiving Unit - CSRU). The post holder will be expected to lead and supervise the junior doctors with the support of the appropriate consultant either on site or remotely out of hours.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will also cover acute ward areas and will be supported by the on call consultant and a full junior team. When they are on the wards they will care for all general medical problems with particular emphasis on the department within which they will work.

Within the hospital there is a weekly grand round. There are opportunities for the successful applicant to teach junior doctors and medical students on secondment from both the University of Oxford and the University of Buckingham medical schools.

There are opportunities to work within the various specialties of the Division depending on the requirement but also on the preferences of the successful candidate. This would involve supporting junior doctors on wards including SDEC (Same Day Emergency Care).

The post holder will be expected to prioritise and time-manage effectively according to the activity of the department and to utilise appropriately the available senior staff for advice.

The post may also involve simulation training, medical student teaching and feedback, management, education or the opportunity to gain a certificate in a certain area of practice if individual candidates are interested.

  • Full MRCP
  • ALS Certificate in date

Experience

Essential

  • Ability to demonstrate broad clinical skills in the management of all patients.
  • 24 months general professional training experience at SHO level in general and acute medicine
  • Experience working at IMT3 or ST3 level
  • Familiar with working practices in the UK

Knowledge/Skills

Essential

  • Ability to demonstrate broad clinical skills in the management of all patients.
  • Able to discuss treatment options with patients and carers in a way they understand

Personal attributes

  • Good communication skills showing a good standard of spoken and written English
