Job summary

The role is a new permanent post for a specialist in Gastroenterology to join the existing team across Frimley NHS Foundation Trust. The role consists of primarily working across Wexham Park and Heatherwood hospital. The post holder will be able to work independently to provide general gastroenterology clinical care along with endoscopic services to patients at Frimley NH Foundation Trust. As this is a senior role, with a commensurate salary offer, the post holder would be expected to be fully trained in diagnostic OGD and colonoscopy. There will be an opportunity to develop and deliver subspecialty services and any of these (IBD, nutrition, hepatology, HPB medicine, interventional endoscopy etc) would be considered. A minimum of 12 years medical work since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which 6 years should have been in the relevant speciality. Equivalent years of experience in a relevant speciality from other medical grades including overseas will also be accepted.

Main duties of the job

  • Be responsible for the medical care of patients in the gastroenterology wards, working alongside junior doctors, advances nurse practitioners and consultants.
  • Commit to appraisal, revalidation, and personal development in line with the statutory and trust guidelines.
  • Assist in developing the service and participate in departmental audit and quality improvement projects.
  • Working across multiple sites as per the needs of the service.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Maintenance of the highest standards in the care of patients with gastroenterology conditions.
  • To share with colleagues responsibility for the day to day management of our Gastroenterology Department.
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Flexibility of duties is expected i.e. assisting with emergency endoscopy.
  • The post holders may also contribute to the out of hours endoscopy rota.
  • The post holder will provide service work to maintain either endoscopy and/or clinic waits to comply with national and local targets.
  • The post holders will support consultants with the provision of inpatient care to patients on the gastroenterology ward and other acute medical areas where required.
  • Where appropriate to participate in the development of research within the service.
  • To Facilitate teaching and training within the department.
  • Participation and involvement in clinical governance, quality improvement and other business in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy department.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MRCP
  • Full GMC and a license to practice

Desirable

  • Higher degree e.g. MSc, postgraduate diploma
  • Computer literate - confident using MS Office, Email and internet

Experience

Essential

  • 12 years of experience following a medical degree with 6 years being in relevant medical specialities.
  • Practises with the professional behaviours and values expected of all doctors as set out in GMC Good Medical Practice
  • Able to evaluate own clinical practice.
  • Able to demonstrate innovative thinking
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrate appropriate leadership behaviour, including the ability to organise and develop service provision.
  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary and interprofessional teams.

Desirable

  • To have completed a teaching or education supervisor's course
  • Previous participation in MRCP and/or student teaching
  • Subspecialty experience

Skills & Knowledge

Essential

  • Clinical experience of general medicine.
  • Ability to lead ward MDT meeting and experience of effective discharge planning
  • Previous experience in delivering interprofessional and post graduate teaching
  • Understand principled and participated in audit activity and quality improvement.
  • Understand the principles of clinical governance and demonstrate experience of evidence based practice.
  • Able to deal with complexity and uncertainty in the care of patients.

Desirable

  • Leadership training
  • Able to independently manage an outpatient clinic.
